GPU speed is MUCH more essential and I backed it up with loads of tests and can provide more,
can you back up your claims that slower GPU than 3850 (like 2600, etc) but with more memory would be faster? You would be right if 3850 would have 64MB, not 256MB

Since the latter is quite enough for even recent games,
even at higher res if you dont use AA. Why? Because game developers (especially MMO creators) are fine tuning the games for what wast majority of players have, i.e. more than 70% of gamers have 256MB or less vram.
To sum it up:
1. If you can afford faster video card with more memory - the better (or its similar priced). If not - 3850 256MB will be more than sufficient to run Aion even at higher res (not like it will often be used for that, see 2nd point) without AA and with texture settings not on maximum (maybe), but medium to high - definately, I'm sure of it.
Example - Hellgate: London, its graphically stunning game, using newer and more advanced engine than Aion, more and better special effects - 3850 with 256MB on 1600x1200 with the highest graphics settings in game (no AA) still runs on 99fps average!
2. About 85% of gamers are using 1440x900 or lower resolution, its safe to assume whoever is buying the
least expensive rig is planning to use it on such res or lower. Why dont I limit cheapest rig to 1440x900? Because it actualy can run higher resolutions at acceptable fps, hence "up to" words, see Hellgate results above. Granted, its guestimates since Aion is still far from release and we dont know how it will actualy run, but I can bet if NCsoft will do decent job at tuning the game, 3850 will run 1600x... and even 1920x... just fine w/o AA and second best graphics texture setting (might even run on the highest like Hellgate, I'm just conservative

Again, those 20 dollars difference might be in your place, in my country difference is ~50$, thus different price grades in my first post, but since it appears in some countries its similarly priced, I updated the post to include this. About "NEED" part, first of all its gpu performance what counts (proved and proved again), memory size is secondary and even at higher res it may limit AA use and
maybe maximum graphics settings, thats it.

Added to the first post, I hope this helps
