With WASD, you have to either turn your char around with A and D (which is really slow and unwieldy), or rotate your camera to face your target and move forward or backward. The auto-face isn't just to help click to move people, it makes it a lot easier for everyone.
WASD allows you to move in any direction while turning your character, so you can do the 180-degree turn while passing the opponent (the keys control movement direction while the mouse controls facing direction). Or heck, you could do the old WoW backstab trick and jump through your opponent and spin 180 degrees mid air so you land behind them facing them. You can even run circles around them while keeping them in your line of sight. A C2M system cannot do that without walking a certain distance past the target and then coming back (unless you have auto-face) and you can just forget about jump spins and circle strafing entirely.
