It's actually quite simple if you put yourself in the shoes of the developpers.
If you want to present a game, which of the 2 following descriptions is shorter, clearer and pulls attention(keep in mind that the game was new at the time)
a) You have the power to direct dynamic relationships between angels, demons, an dragons - to control the fate
of the world (the last part ended being left out off the game btw)
b) You have the power to direct dynamic relationships between a faction that look like angels but aren't angels, a faction that look like demons but aren't demons and a dragonic faction - to control the fate of the world
The 2nd is clear for us now because we already now the game and the lore, but at the time people would be confused with such a description and lose interest. They could add more info but that would make it too long and people would lose interest.
And there's the point that the game was...yes NEW! Meaning they might have had that as first idea but decided to change the concept.
