Hertz in the sense of a television or monitor is how many times it can repaint the screen in a second (or how many times it can address each pixel per second in the case of LCD televisions). Higher numbers are better, that's why the last generation of HDTVs were 60Hz and the latest generation is 120Hz on higher quality products. 120Hz televisions have the benefit of being able to correctly display images from 24fps sources without having to alter the timing of the frames (at 120Hz, each frame gets displayed for 5 cycles). 60Hz televisions have to display every 3rd frame longer (2, 2, 3 @ 60Hz - 5, 5, 5 @ 120Hz). 120Hz eliminates the need for 3:2 pulldown.
