you can gain abyss points from killing enemy players, enemy fortress guards, and mobs. but don't think of it as "wow you can gain points just from killing npcs? who would pvp then?" it's not that simple. if you get ganked by enemy player you will lose abyss points and believe me there are plenty of ganking around in abyss. some people form raid group specifically for ganking purpose, they don't do anything like questing or farming mobs but ganking.
