It's all personal preference.

Some people like playing through a story, they like to roleplay, craft, explore, they love all the quest elements, and the little story details, they like to be able to log in and have fun, maybe accomplish something, maybe not.

Some see content as a hurdle, they find the fastest and most effecient route, they saddle up and focus on getting to the top. They play the game as an endurance race, they prefer a longer grind to seperate them from the noobs/casuals. They aren't really as interested in stopping to smell the roses, they don't generally waste their time with things that aren't gonna advance their toon.

And there are all types inbetween.

There is no right or wrong approach. Hardcores don't want a game where their focus doesn't give them an edge. And casuals don't want a game where they are penalized for taking their time and enjoying the content. And I think there is room in the market for both types of games, and some in between.
