As a female who plays as either a male or female character depending on their looks and the type of community there is in the game, I think I can fairly say that I can understand general reasoning.
See, I play as a male sometimes, especially when female characters' appearance is not to my taste (I hate it when all clothing choices are ridiculously skimpy, etc), and when the community is made up of a large amount of immature boys crowding over pixel ****s. Or when it leads to harassment. Or when it leads to random requests for "being my gf".
On the flip side, however, I can understand males playing as females. I can also understand why this would be awkward for those fooled.
Guys might play female characters for many of the reasons mentioned above in the thread: they want to look at a female character rather than male, they want to have fun with a different persona, certain in-game advantages/disadvantages...and on the more malicious note, fooling people into giving them items or help.
But even I can be uncomfortable when I realize that someone I was talking to was actually the opposite gender-- I don't even try to deny that amongst buddies, I tend to be more "girly" around female friends, and a touch more formal and considerate of topic around male friends (so as not to make them uncomfortable). So when I find out that the "girl" I was chatting about _____ about was actually a guy...it makes me feel a little awkward. But otherwise, it's fine. It's just important not to make assumptions for those who you plan on keeping close. :]
