I disagree.
I don't think the actual mechanic of putting a logo on a shield was ugly at all. I think the mechanic of putting a logo on a "Brown" Shield which was Square with bad artistic filligree (also a light brown) was ugly.
Including some sort of Tabard or Cape with the clan logo would work however. As much as I like the idea of clan emblems, they do seem to litter the screen and not really add to the game. And as I've recently discovered the joy of turning off player names (which also tend to junk up the screen) I feel that the more "stuff" cluttering the screen image, the more "game like' the world feels.
With the expanded character customization it might even be possible to recognize people without it.
Of course in battle, having some sort of emblem or graphic to quickly recognize friend from foe would be needed.
