Another upcoming game has a fixed currency system. It's pretty much like real life as the developers control the amount of money in the system at any one time. With only so much money in the game, the economy will be more stable. This gives the developers the opportunity to balance the system by removing/adding new money to the system.

What they can do with the people that "hoard" money is to add a tax system. Make the top 10 percent of the server pay 80% of the taxes.

That sounds like a great system, but I dont think it would fit in Aion unless you were being paid by the Daeva or your guild (like class guild not player guild)

Wouldnt it be interresting to see the Elyos and the Asmodians have completly different currency. Both of there societys have different types of "gold" but are usable anywhere. So they wouldnt just be at war but have an "economy war" aswell. Although im not quite sure how this would work....

I think that would turn it into a Wall Street War than the epic war that NCSoft wants to depict.

i dont think jedi killed the SWG economy-- i lean more towards the weapon and armor loot drops--unless you are considering suddenly more people were playing jedi which meant less people buying weapons and armor due to said people not playing non-jedi classes so much. then i could see where jedi could have hurt the economy. i find there was and still is, a very large anti-jedi sentiment in that game--which i actually revisited on my elder pre-CU non-respec jedi this weekend last for a guild war. we won of course

i like the idea of loot components dropping for armor and weapons and maybe some lower level items on non-elites and something a bit nicer with a lower drop rate on an elite NPC or for raids perhaps. but generally speaking, i have always been a bigger fan of player-made economies and items. tho i like things to be accessible. a higher drop rate for components and raw materials and higher quantity per drop without a huge number required for items. i thought the L2 system was a bit excessive in terms of such a high quantity of items being required to make components and furthermore the items themselves.

it becomes a balancing act. i am not a hard core player per se-- i need to really, really push myself if i am going to take on the farming mindset for an evening.

My comments about the Jedi were mostly- everyone wanted to be and play one and Jedi had zero use for a WS or AS once robes came to be. And the selling of krayt Pearls- a very very easy item to get for a long time- to Jedi for millions and millions didnt help, either.

I would be perfectly happy if no whole item ever dropped from an NPC. If the only way to get the Flame Sabre is by killing a balrog instead of dropping a ready to use sabre, maybe its the hilt and then you would take that to a weaponsmith to have it reforged.

maybe high end weapons could be craftable only ?? but to craft all your weapons and armor would be a pain in the butt , i would like if, at lower levels you where able to buy your gear with gold only and at higher levels craft your high end gear.

I could be happy low level items you can buy but lets say anything above lvl 30 has to be crafted... it would put a twist on the game and people wouldn't vender there so call useless item cause pretty much everything will have a use for it.

All I have to say is, if the economy system is similar to that of FFXI and I have to farm tediously hours on end just to buy a vendor item, I'll slit my throat. I enjoyed playing FFXI but the time it consumed from traveling to the party system and making money was just too much for me.

I remember to have read somewhere that economy in Aion is auto-balanced (correct me if I'm wrong).
So the most bought items are increased in price at stores (or maybe between player with a tax system, who knows), and vice versa.
Also, the most hunted mobs become stronger.

If an item is considered "junk" and sold to NPCs every second, its price will soon get closer to zero. Nobody will get rich selling junk.
If people get richer and richer, they will use his/her money to buy lots of things, but then, these things will become more expensive as the people buy them. People will have ten times more money, but things also cost ten times more.

If a mob drops a very desirable item, hordes of ebayers will hunt that mob, but then, that mob will get stronger with time, and change its drops. Ebayers will have a hard time seeking for new mobs to hunt.

We'll see if these measures work or not in the game.

Just for the record, vendor items in FFXI, primarily weapons but also many synthesis items, were purposely set at an extremely high buy price and stupidly low sell price to encourage a more player-driven economy. The only time you should ever need to buy a weapon or set of armor from the guilds in that game are generally for crafting purposes.

Over the years, though, it definitely has become increasingly more difficult to make money in FFXI since pretty much all of the newer and better gear that comes out tends to either be quested or dropped from a mob and is rare/ex (unsellable), replacing the old craftable HQ gears, and leaving most crafters with very little options. Also, it's a pretty common occurence (probably every 2-3 months) for POL to go through these huge mass bannings and literally wipe billions from the economy. Nowadays, the economy in that game is pretty dried up, and most money is made from BCNM's as opposed to the crafters and fishermen raking in the gil in the past.

In the end, I have to say I liked FFXI economy, really required you to think and put some time in to get the best craftable equipment, but the majority of the normal gear was easily affordable. Plus nowadays you can pick up a lot of great pieces for free just from doing Assault missions.

I hope Aion's economy is very similar, maybe slightly more forgiving by making mobs drop a tad more cash or something. But in the end, if this game incorporates a heavily player driven economy, which it definitetly sounds like it will be based on this quote:

Q. Are there skills that are not essentially for combat? Like tradeskills?
A. We’re planning for about 10 trades professions in all. Tradeskills are very much separate from regular character leveling. Dedicated crafters will find themselves admired in an economic sense. There’s a variety of content planned outside of leveling and tradeskilling. It will definitely not be a game where all you do is hunt mobs and level.
...then you can probably expect a similar degree of financial challenge in this game to that of FFXI.

maybe you could have your items "grow" with you as you lvl? ex. your armor is not just some armor you picked up but an expression of you personalility and you soul...so instead of using money to improve your armor you would use you xp.

Another idea I have been milling over is...perhaps you can get improvement pieces for armor(ex.armor plates, chain mesh, etc.) to not only change your armors stats but to change it appearance. Maybe these improvement piece can only be crafted by PCs or something.

as for the money problem?....hmmm I'm not good with economics.
