China Bans Gold Farming

Slashdot Games Story | China Bans Gold Farming

Ran across this on MMORPG.com's Aion forums. When I actually stopped to think about it I started to feel bad for the farmers. Haha... I can't imagine what it's like to try and make a living in China.
Think it'll have any impact on Aion in the US/EU?

Thought I'd post this since not everyone is browsing MMORPG.com

Edit: Whoops, didn't notice it was also posted in ChitChat already. Maybe not everyone browses that forum? >_>; Oh well. Discuss!

Thank god they are finally starting.. they got a long way to go.. trust me. Goodluck to Aion chinese branch!

Also I don't feel that bad for them.. idk why. I think it's because they've annoyed me to death on a few of my past mmo's..

80-85% of gold selling is from China? Well, if they ban it like they say they are.. that'll stop most games from having RMTs. /cheer?

o noes, hundreds of thousands of chinese people are out of a job now. Guess they will have to go work in sweatshops. but seriously, chinese people do get paid a few cents an hour to farm for money, this is how "bots" beat bot traps, there not really bots, but real people being paid(poorly) to do that. Although the conditions are much better than working at most sweatshops

I think most people would, i mean sitting at computer farming all day VS standing on your feel all day in a factory with bad air quality, no air conditioning etc. I mean, sure the computer rooms for farming are not the cleanest of internet cafes either, but they sure beat the factory floor. This is also why it has become such a huge business, there's workers willing to do it, and people in the western world willing to pay for the easy way. I mean why do people truly work there asses off? so they can have it easier later on of course.

passing a law/starting the process of getting a law passed, does not at all mean everything will change instantly. Changes on a scale as big as this, often take months, even a year or two for it to be in full effect. Stuff has to be done legally, cant just go "o they passed a law banning gold farmers today, wanna go burn down all the internet cafes"

Notices have to be sent and replied to, people need to be taken to court for failure to comply, and so on.

Kind of like the 20% tax they tried before this effort? Or the all out ban before the tax idea? China kind of has a habit of doing things "for the health of the people" even though they never really intend to implement it. It has something to do with showing that the communist government has the citizens best interest in mind.

Chinese Government Gets In On Gold Farming Action With New 20% Tax
people try and fail, does not mean you didn't try, and it sure as hell does not mean you should stop trying. China is new to the whole democracy thing, so let them work on it. You think US? Canada? Europe? all got democracy right the first time? hell no, it led to wars and conflicts. mutinies and tyranny. Also, if the people have no intention of following the law, the government cant do a damn thing about it, i mean seriously, you want them to throw a few million people in jail?

i remember a few years ago that a law in Calgary got passed making you legally required to wear a bicycle helmet when riding a pedal bike. No one, give or take a few over protective parents, took this law seriously. As a result, it basically failed, you can ride right up to cops and ask for directions etc, they wont give you a ticket or anything for not having a helmet. Proof that mass amount of people > government. Laws only work if the people are willing to comply to some degree, authorities can deal with a few disgruntle people, but not whole city's/country's of disgruntle citizens.

edit* @above, as with most things of this nature, they give them a few months to comply. If they do not, they get slapped with massive fines that are basically meant to bankrupt the company and force its closure.
