You're right. Wow has reached such popularity that it will be really hard to end itself.

My friends who play WoW always tells me the same thing though. I mean they told me they'd try Aion but they're reluctant for several reasons. I play a lot of f2p games and they fear that Aion will be a typical similar f2p grinder with just nice graphics, to which I responded it wouldn't. However for some reason they are still affirm to the fact that WoW Pvp is unrivalled reason being why the stopped playing AoC and War. That I don't understand :c

Hopefully they'll get to like Aion. I'm sick of playing games with people I don't know irl :c

I also found this whilst trailing through mmosite articles.

http://news.mmosite.com/content/2008...30037272.shtml

A retrospective on Warcraft. Not WoW, but more along the foundations of what made it such a great game. Don't get me wrong I really don't endorse WoW. Its good but I wouldn't pay for it, although I remember being a kid and watching my uncle play Lan games in WarcraftII/Starcraft and its one of those things I cherish as a gamer.

Kinda reminds me that I really dislike WoW not for the game itself but because of the incessant fanboy crazy people that follow it like the bible. I'm not surprised though that there will be similar people with Aion

As much as I hate it when people refer to aion as WoW clone(and I really do). We have to think about human nature.
No matter what happens, it lies in the humans nature to compare something with something else and it's usually the thing that's most popular. I've seen it in games, comics, manga's, art and so on. Plenty of examples to find.

Birds that look like chocobo's will automically be referred to chocobo's, although chocobo's are inspired from another creature. (Squaresoft admitted it)
Guys with long white hair and dark clothes will be referred to Sephiroth.
An abstract painting will remind people of picasso.
And so on...
Anything will get referred to something popular for that time until it fades away or replaces something even more famous.

Aion = WoW clone
WoW = Everquest clone
Everquest = probably some other old skool game.

That was a terrible article. :l Best way to compare Aion to WoW is obvz to use old or incorrect Aion information.

Ugh, I know the feeling. Most of my friends either don't play MMOs and those that do play WoW, which I don't really want to play. Even my online friends who play MMOs don't play the games I do, which granted, isn't a lot, but still. x_x; Quite a few of my rl friends and online friends alike are really interested in Aion though, so I guess there's hope yet for playing with people I actually know. xD

I remember times like that too. My friend and I used to watch his dad play Warcraft, and I was an avid Starcrafter at only like 10 years old, it was the second game I fell in love with as a kid and it's still one of my favourite games ever.

Blizzard has hit the nail on the head I guess, but even if WoW is as the fanbois say 'the king of MMOs' it's still not to my taste and I wouldn't pay for it, partly because of the game itself, but mostly because of your second statement. I know perfectly respectable people who play WoW but the idiots seem to far outnumber them, and I have no desire to immerse myself in such a degree of idiocy. There are retards in every game player base, but I've never heard of any being quite so bad as WoW's overzealous fanboys. Everything is a WoW Clone. This game copied this from WoW. WoW rulezzz ur game suxx. Nevermind that WoW's ideas are actually from MMOs that came long before it. >>;

Aion vs WoW
I look at it more like this myself
WoW = good game
Aion = looking to also be a wicked game

To a certain degree not all of WoW's player's are such mindless slaves to it. I'd say its a very small minority of gamers that probably have never experienced any sort of other game before, are very young and are therefore very prone to exaggerating their enjoyment of playing Wow. Kinda like most gamers do, remembering the very first games we played seem amazing. For example most of the Snes Rpgs I played like secret of mana, chrono trigger, the old final fantasies are some of the most enjoyable games I have ever played in my life and back then if someone told me I was wasting my time on them I would have flipped him off simply because I wouldn't know better and also because said person would be probably judging the game through graphics and not through gameplay. That being said snes games will always hold a special place in my heart c:. Anyway xD What I'm trying to say is that in some ways they do annoy me but considering WoW is such a machine... I really don't blame these kids for acting the way they do.

Eventually they'll grow up and realise there are different styles of games to WoW and that each game draws from others. Also why most of the mature community of WoW wouldn't leave is because they're lazy, like all gamers. Probably if I've been playing WoW for around 1-2 years I'd be hesitant to leave too because you'd get so familiar to its style of game play that trying anything else would just feel unnatural and probably boring.

Dunno though. So many players its hard to stereotype them as any particular mind frame

Exactly, I don't hate WoW so much as I hate the fact that WoW could pretty blow off its own foot with a small cannon and not take a major drop in popularity. WoW's fans will forgive WoW and continue to play. Blizzard could probably stop true development ( ripping off other MMOs ) and just sticking out more samey patches and people would still play WoW. WoW is like the Bill Clinton of MMOs in that at this point, most of us have excused his... humping flaws... because he was a good d00d. Except WoW isn't a good d00d. WoW just has momentum.

WoW is full of master merchandising minds, it's a complete braing washing publicity machine. I'm writing an article for my carreer about them and i'm completly amazed. In fact, there, is exactly where World of Warcraft succeeds, add to this the previous Wracrafts and you have a complete pack of followers, fanboys,etc., right there.
Blizzard it's an outstandingly powerfull company and they keep rising. More money = more influencial marketing = more subscribers.
Just go to the WoW forums, read a lot of blue comments (those from the devs) and then analize them. You'll perfectly see how they move the crowd thoughts like puppets, yes, they are that good at dialectics (well, comments with full of contradictions, but that's the case).

In my personal opinion, World of Warcraft is SO centered around its "success formula" that this keeps them contantly testing "things they want to implement" ingame with the game itself, so, of course, then you see "the dominant classes" and then (again) those so called "fotm" rerollers do it's job and keep playing... "lol paladins suck again, rerolling death knight" "time to reroll the cookie cutter class/spec rofl"... and there goes that vicious circle... Although that's good, it's NOT funny for me (for several reasons i wont say here of course). <-- I said this sentense as a simple example.
What i'm trying to say is, Aion is new, Asian (korean), that being said, here comes to stay those complexes such as "korean/asian grindfest" or as someone said above, the WoW clone, but this last one is just like a pseudonym, i would call it "another mmo like/similar to WoW". NCSoft doesn't have to necessarily compete with WoW (i don't even see a competition here, personally), but if that's the deal, they will have to work A LOT (specially on marketing).

To be honest its not just WoW though that has obcessive fanbois/gurlz. In perfect World the administration has been constantly ****ing up with bugs and new events yet people still buy from the cash shop even with its obscene prices. At this rate its more expensive then playing a p2p game. =_=.

Aion has to come out faster darn it.

Its a Joint venture of the smart people abusing on the minds of the weak. I'm not going to blame blizzard for marketing their game the way they do, I mean in all honesty they don't seem that greedy but then again I have never played official WoW. People need to realise that the power lies in the consumer. If you don't like something just leave.

Funny I just answered myself with the second statement for the Perfect world one. =_=. I just play because of RQ though because otherwise I'd be out of that game before you can say LOLF2P. Haha....corny stupid joke. I likeee it~

P.S Apparently the reason WoW does so well :

Serious. Business.

WoW is a good game. In my opinion aion will be better, but I actually don't give a **** to which game is better.

I'll play aion even if it's not better than wow. My guild will play it, my RL friends will play it, so **** WoW, I'm playing aion.

thanks for the post, was a great read. I also am appreciative that they weren't biased to either game.

While this is true, two particularly irritating defenses always spring up:

1.) How do you know? You've never played WoW.

Except I have, I have since release, for two years and if we were to stack my knowledge of WoW then vs. your knowledge of WoW now, there's still a good chance I'll come out on top. When it comes to games, I'm a freaking twink. It's practically my business to know. Not to mention I am literally surrounded by WoW so I try to keep up in WoW news even if I don't play just so I can have conversational topics.

2.) 11 MILLION PEOPLE > YOU.

Great, if eleven million people told you to jump off a bridge, would you? Don't answer that. I don't want to know. I fear the answer will just depress me. Or... way more Honda Civics are sold than Ferraris. But you tell me, which is the better car?

Also... awesome video t0yo

I'd like to add one thing my friends and I say.

First, as a disclaimer, Java's a great programming language. I personally do like Java.

That said,

"Saying Java is great because it works on all platforms is like saying buttsecks is great because it works on all sexes."

Reapply to WoW. I don't know how to make... buttsecks sound cute, but that's as close as I could get. It's an idiom, don't give me crap for referring to... butt business.

I don't understand why wow is so popular, I have been into online gaming for over ten years and have also played alot of mmorpg's a few seriously, yet wow failed to wow me at all. The graphics are awful!

I've even sat there with some tinnies watching high level hunts on boss's etc to try and see if it was any good, it is crap imo

I hope Aion owns wow with a passion and steals all the customers! (apart from the idiots)

Also all this bolax about wow clone? Isn't it alot more of a lineage 2 clone?

Wow is alot like loads of other mmorpg's that were out before wow was even a thought!

Just out of interest: can anyone estimate the actual average number of active people online wow at one time.
