Essentially similar to combo points in WoW. You use particular skills to bring your pattern (combo points) up to a max of five. Unlike WoW only certain skills will raise above a certain amount of patterns. Patterns do not always land. Also if you have your patterns at 4 and use a skill that does a pattern up to 3 your now at 3 patterns not 4. So you have to use skills in a particular order, including Stimgas (Talents) to build your patterns up.
Patterns are on a mob, not your character so if two Sin's are attacking the same mob they share the pattern and build on each other. This means you can stack patterns really quickly but you have to coordinate or you can screw each other up as well. Different abilities will explode your patter or do different things sort of like a finishing move in WoW. Some stun, some put the target in an aerial state (similar to a stun but a pre-req for some decent abilities later on, throws the person in the air and keeps them there), some will do dmg and heal etc.. The more patterns you stack the higher the damage, higher the chance of any extra parts of the abilitiy sticking and increases the duration. Last edited by Aridon; 09-04-2009 at 02:24 AM.. |

Pattern engravings are one of the main skills of an assassin. It allows rune carving up to level 5, and it has several chain skills that lets you carve runes up to 3 or up to 5. (Some skills up to 3, others up to 5.) Each rune that's carved on your opponent/mob has an increased chance in order to stun or put the mob/opponent into aerial state, which are the main disables that we have.
As stated in previous threads, and the PvP thread, the rune carvings are only useful up to level 3 on your opponent because you want to get them into aerial state asap. For mobs, it can depend on the player. If they want to carve up to 5 runes on the mob, it's only useful for the increased damage. I would strongly recommend against it unless you're in a group that has more than 1 assassin in it. (So runes can be carved up to 5 constantly) but with that being said, you need to have good cooperation with your assassin partner. |

It's not 100%, no. People strongly feel that 3 and 5 engravings has very similar if not identical stun rate, and I have to agree with that. But the stun rate is hovering more around 70-80% in PvP, and slightly higher in PvE if you aren't fighting elites or higher level mobs.

Here is my piece of advice to you. Read anything you can that the man F8L posts, he has stickies and comments with his superior knowledge. In fact if you just did a little research you would found nearly everything you asked either in the forums itself or just by reading his Stickies. He spends a lot of time on his research/play so take advantage of a guy whos nice enough to actually spend time teaching young ones how to play their class.
Props to F8L __________________

I'll just add my question to this thread. I played an assassin to level 16, and the patterns/signets that I had didn't seem to do enough damage to be worth building them up at that level. Is that an accurate assessment? When do they become worth using, or was I doing something wrong? It seemed that I would do more damage just by using my other skills and the mob would die fast enough that the pattern/signet didn't seem very useful at that level. Thanks in advance.

The patterns themselves don't do huge amounts of damage but when you explode them it certainly stings and stuns. You absolutely need to stack patterns or you will fail as a Sin. |
