Need a computer made?

I enjoy making PCs. To me, they're big-kid LEGO sets. I'm pretty damn good at putting them together and taking them apart. If you want a PC made for you, but don't want to pay some system-builder's premium price for it, I have a suggestion:

1. Ask for help picking out parts on this forum. The most important information you can give us is how much you're willing to spend.

2. Buy the parts of the internet, normally from Newegg.com (though there are other great alternatives, like ZipZoomFly.com).

3. Have website ship parts to me.

4. Wait a week.

5. Receive completed and tested PC in mail (you pay shipping, I'm poor).

6. ???

7. Profit!

That's all there is to it. Of course, there are other people on these forums that'll do the same thing for you, but you won't be able to track them down so easily as you can a webmaster of a forum if something goes wrong.

This isn't a scam. I'm not going to run away with your parts. I've done this before with a longtime forum member, Chu. Here's the threads:

I hate computers.

EDIT: I'm only offering this to people in the continental US. Shipping overseas is killer!

Builder locales:

Southeast US - Mark
Midwest US - Aznkenshin, knite16
United Kingdom - Howling
Portugal - Slayra

I can't vouch for anyone but myself, but I can give you information to track down these guys if they do you wrong.

I'd hate to ruin your business, but I'm open for building PCs if you're lazy to ship the parts to Florida. I live in Illinois (Midwest), so I'm just an alternative to Mark's building skillz.

NOTE: Should particularly apply to people who are low on budget and can't afford to ship to Mark's. If you live close to that area or money isn't a problem, go with the pro.

I can help out anyone in SE Minnesota or SW Wisconsin. Heck, if I'm close enough I'll come to your place to do it

But Mark is right, for best peace of mind, you're "safer" sending stuff to a higher profile person, like Mark himself.

Isn't it too risky to ship a PC with proc/mobos and air cooling assembled ? And specially if the air cooling system is HUGE

I always work on my computers with socks on and on a carpeted floor, as to greatly increase the chance of static discharges. Unfortunately, I've failed to actually kill any system parts this way, and it's ****ing me off. They said I'd generate static electricity and that aforementioned static would kill my parts, but it's never worked! Oh well, there goes another potentially interesting rumor.

To be fair out of everything i've only ever outright lost a mainboard (it was an MSI, so no biggie ) but you can just damage components with the 'latent damage'. If unluckly it wont kill the thing, but can cause problems longer-term probs like create bad sectors in RAM, cause the component to fail (god bless sudden death syndrome, ever played wow when one of your RAM's explodes? its not so great) earlier and such.

I do always work at a desk, wrist-strap and grounded but then thats just me, and i've lost more components than you is all down to a bit of luck methinx

Great idea Mark! And you did a pretty good job with Chu's computer!
As for me, I don't need someone to build it for me, since one of my best friends is an IT expert and owns his own ISP company (oh yea:P). The problem I have is that in my country, the prices are so big compared with the US or even some other European countries, like the UK. I was looking for quite some time for someone who can buy me the parts necessary from another country and then ship them to me.

As an example, the newegg.com price for an Intel E6850 @3.0GHz is 280$. In Romania the price is 345$ :O

1 question.. if you want to ship like 3 components, can you ship them in the same box? So you don't have to pay the shipment tax x3? Or they go by weight?

Anyway... 'till June, when I'll put my budged together and make my build is a long time.. but I'll keep you guys in mind
Thanks for the generous offer!

It's by weight, so the more you put in one box the more it costs to send that box, but it often saves money to do it that way. I don't know how much it costs to ship overseas, though. It might be expensive and not worth it. We'll see.

Places that I've ordered from and had good experiences with:

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!
ClubIT.com - Find Great Deals On Computer Parts, Laptop Parts, Desktop Computers, Notebooks, and Electronics
Mwave.com: Home Page
CDW - IT Products and Services for Business
ZipZoomFly (though these guys are apparently in the decline - I've heard customer support horror stories but I've never had to deal with their support so can't say first-hand)

There are a couple I am forgetting but newegg, clubit, mwave, and cdw are the places I usually hit first.
