Ok.
But keep in mind that English is not my primary language. If anything is unclear, read the Wikipedia.

Cider/Wine are not emulators in the traditional sense. Console emulators have to emulate the hardware. Cider/Wine are roughly like software "translators". For example: it could be that in Windows, to make a window appear, you have to call "Win32API->CreateWindow", but in Linux you need to call "Create_Window" so Wine simply translates the call from one to another.
Notice that sometimes there is no direct equivalent from one command to another, so Wine/Cider need to use the available functions in their respective systems to get the same behavior of Windows. Altough this may seem bad, it isn't. Most of the time, "emulated" apps run FASTER on Wine/Cider because they are a better implementation of Windows calls than Windows itself. And they benefit from the superior memory management of these systems aswell.

Note however, that Wine/Cider are a work in progress, and there are some difficulties that make development slow (i.e. Windows API docs are not accurate, so the devs have to do some reverse engineering), so some things just don't work (but will eventually).

The good news: most of the modern game engines are supported. That includes the CryEngine, UT engine, etc.
The bad news: GameGuard cannot run because it needs direct access to the hardware (system RAM), and Linux prevents it. In fact, it uses some virus techniques to mess up your system.

Why you should sign/ask for a Mac version of Aion?
  • Because Aion will run faster (hopefully) on those platforms using Wine/Cider/Cedega...
  • Because the only thing they need to do is stop using GameGuard.
  • Because GameGuard behaves like a virus: injects code into processes, eats up system resources, can not be stoped, can not be uninstalled, and hides itself from the system
  • Because that gives you more freedom to use what OS you want. Freedom is always good.

I hope that will clarify some things.

Definitely a /sign. I currently play WoW (just about the only RPG for Mac at the moment) and I would definitely switch over to play this and, of course, bring my gaming buddies along with me. Just from seeing a video of this game, it looks great! Make this available for Mac and I will forever be in your debt <3. Another reason that BootCamp + Buying Vista is a bad idea is that:

A) BootCamp still has kinks;
B) Some Mac users DON'T want to spend 100$ + the cost of the game to play Aion;
C) Personally, my Mac doesn't have enough HardDrive Space at the moment, and I wouldn't want to shell out the extra money for an external HardDrive along with BootCamp and Vista.

I really do think that all games should be multi-platform, it shows a lot to the community that the developers and producers truly care about their community and the expansion of it. Anyways.
Thanks for Reading,
Clinkz

Yes they should give equal time to the 10% of machines that aren't PCs, makes alot of sense to me.

Be slightly more ignorant in everything you say? I already don't like you and I just signed up for these forums. I have seen no devotion from the NCSoft team to truly develop something even close to deserving the title of "OMG THE GREATEST GAME EVARR." They could try by doing what Blizzard did and make their games multi-platform, I'm not saying that they have to be like Blizzard, I'm just saying if they want to have a decent game they could at least make a multi-platform release. It's not like they won't make money from it and they don't have to redevelop the game...

Damn, your right I give up.

But, before I go and hide my head in shame, could you answer a couple of things?

Are you informed of the costs to port a game? Is it worth it for the less then 5% of people?

Sure, Blizzard has the funds to do this, but do you think a company who is, no offence, in a slightly lower division then Blizzard would be able to do this?

Are the only decent games multi-platform?

Is that a request? Thank you for your mature retort.

And my job is then done.

Actually bothered to check and Mac market share in the US is 7.57%, as of 12/07 though that is debatable, and considerably less when considered worldwide.

Enjoy your stay.

That has been my goal since May of 2005; I can now rest knowing it was a job well done.
