Planning a video upgrade?..You might want to wait

As stated before...Nvidia is planning to release their GT200 architecture which has been on permanent hold due to the lack of a "competitive" product from AMD. Nvidia is planning a GT200 launch time frame for this summer, estimated rumors are stating a July release.

X-bit labs - Nvidia Describes Next-Generation Graphics Processor.

Now do keep in mind this is in regards to their new architecture, which will be far superior to what is out now. For those who don't know...the current 9 series isn't a new series, it's just a derivative shrink of g80 (8 series). But we'll finally get a new architecture soon...

BUT, the reason for this post...Is ATI's standing on their upcoming R770. It was stated for a July release as well...Since the fiasco over R600's release, AMD/ATI has been on time in regards to releases for their chipsets and gpu's. Unfortunately this isn't the case this time, I'm proud to say that R770 is ahead of schedule =P...It was planned for a July release, but expect it in the May time frames =P...Since this is the case, expect information regarding the architecture to pop up soon, I'll post the full specs when it does.

TG Daily - AMD’s Radeon 4800 in production

This might mean a earlier launch of the GT200 as well, as Nvidia has been holding out on GT200 to slap aside the commotion of AMD/ATI's new gpu units. We'll have a very interesting few months ahead of us =P....

For those planning to upgrade, I heavily suggest waiting...Buying into the current architectures really just isn't worth it at this time...Most will say that playing the waiting game is a bad thing to do...But considering that the G80 architecture will be the king of the hill for around 24 months by the time GT200 comes out in the next few months...I'm sorry but the waiting game is necessary. This mostly concerns those picking up higher end solutions, as Nvidia tends to release high end first...But AMD/ATI doesn't work that way as they release full pricing ranges at a time. Expect performance per dollar to rise.....So plan accordingly =P.

-----------------------------------------

Edit: 11:00 PM PST, May 12th 2008.

Just wanted to state that rumor is out that Nvidia might be bringing their GT200 to us a month earlier then expected, rumor is they are ahead of schedule and want to move closer to ATI's time frame of release would be my best guess regarding their move up. Even though we have yet to see any compelling images of R700 or any benchmarks, it is getting closer. I'll keep you guys posted on how everything unfolds.

-----------------------------------------

Edit: 2:10 AM PST, May 13th 2008.

Alright guys, more news coming in...This is from Fudzilla though, and they aren't that reputable...But it does so far seem to be on the right track. The push up for the r700 seems to be back onto the normal release schedule unfortunately =(...Makes me feel sad that the may timeline turned out to invalid now =(. We'll be getting R770 XT/Pro series (4870/50) in late June or early July.

Fudzilla

Nvidia will also be following the same time frame, a June release for their upcoming card. With a preview for journalists at the end of this month.

Fudzilla

Due not that this is indeed fudzilla, which tends to be inaccurate, but sometimes they get a few things right =P. It's going to be a painful weight with the NDA covering all the goodies, but we'll just have to wait and see. It's nice to hera though that we are getting closer, new architectures coming soon ^_^...I'm expecting big things from Nvidia, hopefully ATI can match up.

-----------------------------------------

Edit: 4:54 PM PST, May 14th 2008

Two more links for you guys, one form fudzilla, and one from tgdailty

Fudzilla

TG Daily - ATI Radeon 4800 launch details: Meet (Terry) Makedon and Trojan (Horse)

(TGDaily link courtesy of Marady)

We're pretty much looking at June/July now guys. but keep in mind these are new architectures, and buying anything out now will only end up with you slapping yourself on why you didn't wait =P. This will mostly cater to the high end market the most...But I expect the r770 pro to be priced accordingly with current cards such as the 9800 GTX...Around there...I don't know if the pricing is accurate on those cards int he tgdaily article, nothing to due with TGDaily, it's just those prices seem a bit low for new high ends. But we'll have to see how everything rolls out.

I had intended to build my PC in may or june, but after hearing about the new chipset, I decided to wait for it.

Wow guys..the r770 looks great...more information surfacing..

Leak: ATI Radeon 4800 Gets 480 Stream Procs - Tom's Hardware

It definitely looks like a goody..and the pricing looks fantastic if it holds true...a 4870 will be priced around 300-350..with the 4870x2 around 499.99 when it is released later on. God I love AMD/ATI...No way as greedy as Nvidia, while offering better driver support, video/3d visual quality, and overall a great experience....The only downside is the lack of decent partners...What I'd give for XFX/Evga to start up an ATI based division >_<....

But yea, future is looking bright...Let's just hope the performance is there where it matters....

This is exactly why competition is ftw. Long live Amd/Ati for the sake of the consumer, and bring it on Intel/S3/whoever.

...I did however sell my AMD shares back when it was ~32/share. teehee.

=P...probably made a good profit marady ^.^...lol

I'm really looking forward to larabee numbers in 2009. Definitely going to be some very tasty stuff coming our way from Intel. I doubt S3 will bring much to the gpu field, I'm not counting them out yet...But I'm not expecting a miracle with their amount of R&D funding/staff.

I could care less about customer support or drivers. I've never had a problem I couldn't fix myself with some creativity. I've never gotten a bad card or motherboard or CPU either, from Intel or AMD or ATi or nVidia. I've seen plenty of people complain about bad parts *cough*Chu*cough* and it turns out it was user error *cough*stupid noobs*cough*. I'm so sick of people complaining when things don't work perfectly out of box. I'm sick of people complaining about not getting 100+ fps in Crysis in their NewEgg reviews, like I ****ing care. So ****ing sick of it all. How lazy are people allowed to be before I'm allowed to kill them for wasting...everything they've ever used?

Numbers is what I care about. Whoever has the better price/performance ratio for around $200 wins my money.

For the record, I started buying parts off the internet and making PCs back when Prescotts were hot, literally. I've never had to RMA a single part I've bought off the internet, having made multiple PCs over the years for myself, my family, and my friends. I started making PCs from scrap parts donated to me back when Pentiums were the ****. I've fixed computers as old as me or older, no lie. Packard-Bells. Stupid people failure is more common than hardware failure. Trust me. Too many dumb people have too much money.

I've been building rigs for people for AGES...I've had my fair share of bad parts, It does happen...It's common to receive faulty ram modules, or a malfunctioning Mobo. Not VERY common, but it does happen...and mine are obviously not user error =P.

But customer support and drivers are a big deal..no one wants their computer down for a week, few weeks, or a month or so due to crappy RMA support by the company they purchased their component from. But in relation to computer hardware...it isn't uncommon as stated to receive faulty hardware....Drivers though DO matter, such as getting flickering shadows in half life 2 based games (nvidia based cards have been suffering from this), or just poor gaming performance in general. Drivers play an important role in system performance and resolving graphical glitches in newer titles...It's always a smart thing to upgrade your drivers in order to improve performance or fix arising issues with new titles...At times performance does degrade though with older titles, or new issues may arise, but it's not a bad thing to stay up to date =P....

I do agree about the crysis comment though, some games are just ahead of the curve graphically...Same situation with Elder Scrolls before, it was a graphics hog when you were outdoors, and people were getting low frame rates. But it's to be expected by a game pushing graphical boundaries, it pushes the development and release of faster and more powerful graphical units....I'm actually on dual 8800 GT's..and I was getting around 18-30 or so FPS in crysis with nearly all setting on high ( a few on medium...but a very few)..This was DX9 though...But I'm not expecting even the next upcoming architecture from Nvidia or ATI to handle crysis fluidly in a single gpu setup...If you want fluid graphics in crysis though, it will be capable with the next GT200 architecture coming out by nvidia, but you need to pick up 2 in order to do so via SLI...The game is just ahead of the curb when it comes to graphics...it happens =P. I guess people just don't like paying 600 dollars for the baddest on the market and getting mediocre frame rates when you can pick up a console and have a wonderfully fluid gaming experience....But that isn't what PC's are only about, and if you do buy it for those reasons...You may as well just pick up a console =P....Pc's won't always be hassle free....I guess with the more recent increase in complaints has to lie on the fact that there are a lot more people playing consoles now-a-days....And they are just use to it.

VR-Zone : Technology Beats - GeForce 9900 GTX & GTS Slated For July Launch

July has been confirmed...So we get r770 next month, or early the month after...Along with GT200 in july ^_^. Things are looking up =D.

LOL, this reminds me of the time my friend tried to upgrade his own processor, I was like... you don't know how to do that...

It overheated because he didn't place the adhesive solution or whatever on right....

This may be bad for my aionsource rating to attack the GM of the site, but Mark, you asked for it.

As a system builder, your rant borders in the immature and infantile. Parts do go bad, period. For instance, how would YOU fix a cracked motherboard or improperly soldered parts on a mb? LOL yah, thought so. Also, you are failing to realize that MOST ppl in the world don't have a clue about how to build or repair computers. That's the reason we can charge them $70 an hour to change their video card, haha.

Here's the facts, especially in Florida where we live Mark, parts are man made and parts break. Also, things like electrical strikes cause computer failures both to battery backups (I'm on #3 in 4 yrs). And when I had an internet cafe in Orlando a few years back and got an entire batch of faulty motherboards. Yes, I could have spent many hours fixing them, but I also don't think it's unfair to expect a product to work out of the box...or a game at launch. :P

I think you are frustrated at something that now comes naturally to you but will not for MANY others. It is up to ppl like us to try and help them if they truly want help. Some ppl will come and complain just to complain, but I think alot of concerns are legit. That's why when I build a computer, I made a video that shows them EVERY component inside their system and how to reset/replace each one. It saved me hundreds of hours a month on the phone explaining simple things and how to fix em.

Just my 2 cents. It's obvioius you care about us by making this site. Just remember many ppl are lazy or lack the intellect/time to understand something we love and understand so easily.

Larabee is still far off...I've been looking forward to it heavily though. But no one should be waiting for Larabee, the launch date is way too far =P...I was just mostly referring to what's coming out within the next 3 months. We'll get a first look at larabee in 2009...Not a launch...No date about when it will be released. If it is launched in 2009, I expect late q3/q4...or most likely into 2010.

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how it performs ^_^, especially the fact that this isn't a gpu...just numerous miniature CPU's. There have been a lot of rumors and words about features, but I do remember hearing that it can be utilized for more then just gaming considering they are mini x86 cores....Might actually be able to utilize them in a way to boost system performance out of gaming as well....Larabee has a lot going for it right now since no one knows what it will actually bring, but I'm just glad intel thought out of the box on this one ^_^...It has a lot of potential considering the way it's being built...Let's just hope it can perform well in rasterized operations as well ^.^.
