monitor vs. tv

computer monitors are so expensive compared to most of their television counterparts. especially since my roommate has a dealership with most tv manufacturers! if i were to buy a 32" 1080p LCD television versus a 26" normal computer monitor, how big of a difference in quality would there be? i'm running a 2.8ghz quad core, 4 gigs of ram, and the nvidia 9800gx2 video card which has 1g of video ram. i'm a stickler for quality, but size does matter!

I use a 17" monitor, and it find it a hell of a lot easier on the eyes than my 32" Regza. I only use my TV when I play games that don't require you to read small text... I'll still try with Aion, but my eyes aren't going to be looking forward to it. >.>

Keep in mind that HD sets have smaller resolutions depending on which you have. There are a few people who pick up 32" or higher HD sets as a computer monitor....But I would honestly never do so. If you want to even consider an HD set as a monitor, you need to pick up a 1080p set...720 p is just too small of a resolution for the size. So if you are quite close to your monitor...the pixels are MASSIVE which is very unpleasant....1080 p sets with their 1920x1080 resolution aren't bad...but still suffer from larger pixels which make it difficult.

You really just can't compare the two, yes computer monitors may be more expensive for their size, but they make up for it in resolution, and quality depending on the model and type of TFT panel used.

The difference between a good 24" monitor and a low cost 1080p set is massive. Keep in mind you may be able to get a 1080p set around 32" for about 1000 or so...But those are the lowest of the bunch...compare the quality of a monitor like that to a high quality 24" and you'll see the difference quite easily..as long as you pick up a quality model that is =P.

Personally..try to avoid 26" monitors...they still have 1920x1200 pixels, which is the same as 24" lcd's...so the pixels are just larger. 24" is the sweet size imo. But if you want bigger between 24" to 30" it is possible to still pick up something good.

If you want a nice IPS 26" within a decent price range, check out the Planar PX2611W...considering the Gaming IPS panel based monitor...definitely a goody...Still nothing compared to a Nec2490WUXI, but those retail for around 1300-1500 depending on where you get it...but the nec2490wuxi isn't the best choice for gaming due to input/response time issues, but it is without doubt the best 24" monitor in terms of color production and quality =P.

but yea, for a 26"...look at the Nec 2490WUXI, should be priced around 800-900 or so.

the one i use with a rig similar to your's. complaining about the pixels size is jsut about the same as telling you see a difference beteween 40 FPS and 50 fps

while the visual isnt as good as nec, its still very good and the price is very interesting ( at least here in europe)

went from old 17" monitors to 22" one then LCd's 19" and now this 28" ( actually 27.5) and i love it.

Meh, I prefer having a modest widescreen monitor. As long as it supports HD, I think 20.1" is good enough. As for televisions, it makes a pretty big difference for me at least. I remember playing CoD4 on my girlfriends' PC and older television. CRT, I think. I always think of monitors when I say CRT, that I don't know if it applies to TVs as well. Anyways, I went to a friends house and played the 360 version on a 50-some-odd HDTV. And what I lacked in comfort with controls I made up for in ability to see everything cuz of the picture quality, due to the size of the TV. I consistently topped out in all my online matches that night. Now I have it for my 360 and play it on a 36" HDTV. Still kicking ***.

Ipmia...It may not be an issue to YOU...But I heavily doubt you speak for the general public. Pixel size is an issue for some people who sit pretty close to their rigs...Plus, the bigger the size, the worst the viewing angles will become for close up monitors. So there are a lot of factors to consider...

In terms of your 40-50 fps comment....I laugh every time I hear comments like this...Because the human eye is capable of much more...I laugh even more when people say anything above 30 fps can't be seen. The true fact is, our eyes can...I can easily tell the difference between 50 or 100 fps...and many others can as well...So I wouldn't jump the gun claiming something like that.

i dont have a perfect view that is for sure, but i dont see the pixel size being a problem here as long as you sue the native resolution of the lcd screen. it s not liek you are playing on a high resolution screen using let s say 800*600 res

as for FPS yea i never said an eye cant. The point is anything become smooth after 30 ihes FPS. This being said depending on one eyes, human can see WAY more, lot of factors comes to this consideration . Maybe i should have phrased it dirrently on my previous psot.

here a intersting article about fps and factors making the motions fluid or not.

How many frames per second can the human eye see?

would playing on a bigger screen effect my FPS at all? make my video card work harder? price of the monitor isin't --too-- big of a deal because i can get most everything at dealer cost. i figure if i got a 30" or 32" 1080p tv and sat about 4 feet away from it that it wouldn't be too bad, right? i'll probably try it out and return it if it's just too much of a difference.

I'm still in love with my Apple Cinema Display. I just want to go from the 20" to the 30"

its not the size that affect your FPS but the reslotion. problem with LCD monitor is that you need in most of the case to play at native resolution wich mean very high for 30" monitors and therfore require a very good grafic card setup.

Kaelan could answer better to that, but i doubt a 8800 GT for instance can run a game ( new games that is)at max res on a 30" with full settings.

I think someone posted some specs of a beta tester that was playing at max res and high settings with a 3870. FPS was kinda all over the place at certain parts. It's a new game, but you gotta remember this is just a modded 3-4 year old engine. I doubt the beta is fully optimized as well so I would think a 8800GT(s) could probably play it on max.

Here's the link if ya missed it.

FINALLY someone posted their CPU specs and the result!

i was refering to 30" monitors , they usually use a resolotion of 2560 x 1600 .. that more than 1920*1200

that a lot of things to take care of even for a card as good as the 8800 imo, specially if the card doesnt have enought RAM

so hows about that on a 30" or 32" tv set? would that look as good as a 24" monitor, but bigger?
