Bad News ;;

Let me start off by saying I appreciate everyone that helped me out with my computer. This post is just to tell you what happened, and maybe give you a little advice.

So, let me start off by saying something a lot of you have heard, which is, my power supply was dead. ):!
And it was also too powerful for the set-up that I had, so sorry Kalaen, I know you were helping, but you went a little overkill, even though you were probably trying to make sure I had enough power, which I appreciate. :P I brought it to Milwaukee PC, and they tested it all and figured I'd need at max 520 watts, so I picked up a 550. The 610 /might/ have killed some of my parts, which, wouldn't have mattered once you found out my other bad news.

THE MOTHERBOARD WAS KA-PUT TOO! D:!

So, after we got the right power supply, and all that, they test the motherboard, and it's also a dud. (What terrible luck!)

Then they said that since it was fried, I /could/ have killed my hard drive, video card, and audio card. (Oh my god. ;_

So, I called up Newegg, and I'm just returning everything. (Lol what a waste of time, even though I had fun and learned A LOT)

Tomorrow I am going to Milwaukee PC and picking up all my parts, I'll build it (With my dad's friend.), and if anythings bad, a quick 10 minute run to the PC store and everything is good.

So tomorrow, I will 99% be sure my computer will be done.

So yea, a dead PSU, a dead MoBo, and possible fried components. Talk about an adventure for my first PC. (Bad luck!!!!)

Thanks to everybody who helped me out, remember to check how much power you need. ^^;

And btw, I'm working with my dad's friend, who owns his own computer company, GenTech, or something like that. <.< So everything should be good.

Oh, I forgot THE ONLY GOOD NEWS! Since he owns his own computer business, he has an account at MilwaukeePC, and he gets anywhere from 25%-50% off of every part. So even though my restocking fee adds up to about, 80-90$, I'm gonna save money and probably pick up a few extra stuff. (Another hard drive, and the 9800GTX video card) I'm also going to get a see through case, liquid cooling with lights inside it (I have no clue how it works he just said we could do it. Lol), so the liquid will glow. I'm gonna get lighted fans, and a lighted power supply. (All the same color of course.) So it's not only gonna perform great, it's gonna look great! (I might not hide it under my desk now, lol.)

And, everything is thanks to you. If you wouldn't have helped me put a PC together and me order it, my dad probably wouldn't have mentioned getting help from their computer guy, I would have been completely lost, and very upset when It wouldn't start because 2 of the parts were dead, and I wouldn't be getting a nice rig.

So... yea, thanks! Tomorrow I will post pics of the system, (Maybe saturday, because after going there, picking everything out, building it, doing BIOS, configure hard drive's, then the OS, It might be late and I might pass out. Lol.)

I realized I said things multiple times, and this is a huge post, and I probably should have put, "INCOMING: WALL O' TEXT", but yea, I'll end it now.

Thanks. (Yet again) And talk to everyone later. :P

You know, your posts sounds a LOT like Chu's post two years ago.

You know what was wrong with her components?

Nothing. I put it all together and it worked, first time I pressed the power button.

But anyhow, good luck.

Dude Gravity, get me in on the goods. I need a new video card and a 9800 GX2 sounds pretty nice :P

In any case, did you sniff test? Burnt / fried silicon gives off an extremely distinct musk that is permanent so if you fried your components, you'll know it. But the fumes are also toxic, so don't sniff too much ( it's pretty obvious, it even smells poisonous ).

Also, your components only use as much power as they need so having a PSU that is too strong won't make a difference. What might make a difference is the current or whatever. I believe US is 110 or 220 and EU is the other. Being on the setting can fry your PSU. I seriously don't remember though.

you cant kill your pc by having too much power. what may have happened is the mobo was grounded to the case and killed the mobo or it could have been a dud psu i have it happen to me before.
i dont think its rite you are blaming Kalaen

what plasma said, you can kill you're mother board with a PSU that give you way more power than need. Your component only use the amount needed. It works like electiricty at home.. you have light that use 40 to 100 wwats yet the power supply deliver the same amount without tisk for the components as long as you dont "force" power ( wich only happen if you play with bios voltage and i assume you didnt ).

@Plasma: When did I say I blamed Kalean? Please learn to read. I don't need idiots here putting words in my mouth.

I said his PSU was a little too strong, and it might have killed stuff, but it didn't matter, because it was dead anyway.

@Mark: Don't worry, It's fried, lol, smells more burnt than black toast. ): And I had them test everything. But yea, I at least know how Chu felt when he thought his stuff was fried, lol.

@Celestin: I honestly could, because my Dad's business J.F. Menzia & Sons has a sub-account under his GenTech account, so they'll recieve the discount too. So, all I'd have to do is bring my I.D. that shows my last name is Menzia, (I don't work there, but it would be easy to bluff, and if they called my dad and uncle Brian would say I do.) And if that don't work, my dad can just go up there with me.

@Ipmia: Did you even READ my post? I said my PSU AND motherboard where dead, multiple times. I did NOT say my PSU killed my motherboard. >.>

To all future posters, if you did not read my post, please don't bother posting. Kthx.

Sorry, but your post is a bit confusing. You said that the power supply /might/ have killed a few parts and you go on to say that your mobo is not working and such. First time I read it I thought the power supply killed it by your wording.

Saying that the power supply was overkill and /might/ have destroyed some parts is giving people the wrong idea of what you wanted to say.

I said that the PSU was defective, and it might have killed some parts because it was defective, and possibly because it was too strong, then I said I had more bad news, the motherboard was also defective.

I purposely talked about the motherboard in another sentence just so that people wouldn't think the PSU killed it, but obviously people still think I said that.

The PSU wouldn't do any harm for being "too powerful" ever. There's no such thing as being too powerful, it's like saying "x game won't run because my pc is too good"...

On another note, don't bother with liquid cooling unless you plan some HEAVY overclocking, which I doubt you'll be doing. Air cooling is more than enough for stock frequencies, and for standard overclocks.

Sorry, you system didn't work out for you. That's good you'll have someone knowledgeable helping out with good prices.

Well that sucks. IMO, you should have at least kept the hard drive, and still got a second one!
Maybe I've just been lucky, but I still haven't had any DOA parts from Newegg.

Also, what case/lighting color are you getting?

power supply too powerfull killing the rest of a system?

not likely if you ask me.

A power supply only gives what your system asks for nothing more nothing less.
100 watt more or less should not make a difference.

I did keep the hard drive, and the dvd drive, we're gonna test them today, and if they work, we're keepin' 'em. (The restocking fee + cost to ship the dvd drive is almost as much as the dvd drive itself..)

Btw, I'm in the car now, we're going up to Milwaukee PC to get parts. (I might keep the case and just get a plexiglass side panel, I dunno. ;_

Ah I have no clue what I'm gonna do, but I'll figure it out once we're there and see what we need. :P
