Windows 7
Take a look ( and read ) at this :
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, CEO Steve Ballmer and Windows 7 Preview | D6 Highlights | AllThingsD They really went after the guys at that interview . What is apparently clear is that internally MS now considers Vista as an "in-between-OS" like Windows ME was . They will have to change how the new OS works though. It simply has to be modular . There's no way businesses - the bulk of sales come from businesses - will switch to an even more resources-hungry OS as is the case with the XP-generation of OS's . Also take note of the number of folks downgrading from Vista to XP. Things to take note of as well is the touchscreen - capablity of Windows 7 . As is pointed out by the interviewers though : they have to take Apple's next OS into account as well . If - and only if - Microsoft manages to produce a modular OS which uses lots less resources than either XP or Vista at its core I think Windows 7 might be a winner . If they abandon the modular approach due to to time-constraints- like they did with Vista and its new FMS - and release it with redundant code which has been part of Windows since day 1 , it will mean another failure . However: I'm pretty sure the Vista-mistake has had such an impact on the "thinking " within MS-development team it's unlikely they'll release it before it's ready . In the entire Yahoo- Microsoft debate there is one thing very clear . Neither MS or Yahoo are the winner here , but another company is : Google . |

They stole the touch-interface badly - it doesn't make much sense on a Workstation. Next is the "new" dock... Somehow, I've seen this before. And even the Dock look-alikes for KDE and GNOME (on Linux) look better.
Sad. Really Sad.

Apple apparently, borrowed their touch interface. We'll let the courts settle that. Microsoft though does seem to be a bit lost in the digital wilderness.

MS is one big beast to turn it on a dime, but once it gets on the right track it'll be hard to stop. If they get back on the right track, of course. Honesltly, I have no problems whatsoever with Vista. Everything is really smooth for me, but there is enough backlash out there for MS to sit up and take notice. They really do need to re-design their OS from the ground up, focusing on an efficient, modular design. And yes, they do need to incorporate good ideas from external sources, as well as their own (i.e. touch tech).

I personally love XP. I wish it was capable of DX10 and more than 4 (3.2?) GB of RAM. Obviously it needs to change with the times. Vista has only been a headache for the people around me using it and I hope they learn from its launch.

Vista's been peachy for me so far, once I made it look like windows. Now granted, it did require a hardware upgrade, but so did xp back in the day.

Knite you can have more RAM with XP you just need the 64bit flavor. Been on Vista for 15 months without issues.

gay. I dont want to lift my arms that high to touch something. Its fine like it is. Its like playing piano.
Nobody stands up opening the piano and tries to put the finger on a string... ffs it is fine.

If you say Apple did it first, then you deserve a sucker punch to the throat.
They debuted their touch interface before the iPhone.

The most important thing they need to do isn't the touchscreen-interface though. That's all of secondary importance. They need to get rid of the redundant code and start from scratch for this one and make it a modular OS .
They also need to scrap MS-DOS for the new FMS that has been in development since Vista was first anounced and wasn't included with Vista due to "time-constraints " . My suspicion is Windows 7 is what Vista was originally supposed to have been just like windows XP was compared to ME. What is also certain is that they can't really alllow another debacle like the few they have seen last couple of years : trying to win battle with Google, try to battle Ipod with the Zune , Vista and last , but not least , the Yahoo thing . I'm getting the impression Gates has taken control over MS more again to have better coordination . Last edited by Livvy; 05-29-2008 at 03:10 PM. |
