CPU fan speed

Hello, my AMD 3800 runs kind of hot, it was a prebuilt computer...and the fan speed runs rather slow. A few times I have seen it over 1k, but most of the time it runs at around 400rpms. My idle speed is anywhere from 47-52...and I think thats rather hot. Is there a way other than BIOS to change the speed? I'm pretty sure my BIOS doesnt have the option.

What motherboard do you have?

What 3800 do you have? Socket 939 or AM2 (they used different fabs if I remember correctly and thus have different thermals).

When you say "idle speed is anywhere from 47-52", I assume you mean idle temp? The fan speed will go up and down, especially if you have Cool&Quiet enabled in BIOS. While the temps may seem high at idle, it really depends what they spike to under load. If you idle at 47C but only ever hit 57C under load, it's not really a problem (as an example). What is your ambient room temp? Do you have good case air flow?

ambient room temp is anywhere from 18-25C, and yes i meant temp not speed. I disabled Cool N Quiet but it didnt seem to change the speed. My fan doesnt make anymore noise on 2000 Rpm than it does at 400rpm, so I would prefer it to be on max at all times.

I dont have the best airflow, but on the side panel of the case there are holes just over where the CPU is.

Socket S939, mobo is a MSI MS-7123.
