install a firewall, you can never realise the same potential on macs as you can on normal desktops, instead of spending stupid money on macs for 'running' things just buy some ssd's, i heard about a bunch of guys who went raiding on 9 of them (admittedly extreme) they were booting vista 64bit ultimate in 4 seconds.

solid state drives, not cheap but you if you can afford the money for a 'decent' mac then ssd's should not really phase you

And just because slashdot is nice enough to aggregate stuff... It is a common misconception that Macs are more secure than Windows. Macs are just as vunerable as Windows but, due to the smaller market share, are attacked far less and, due to OSX's use of the Mach kernel and BSD, has different attack vectors which fewer people are familiar with. Macs would be more secure if more people understood what was going on "under the hood" (because the OS gives you the ability to see what's actually going on, unlike Windows) rather than going "hey, look at my super cool shiny laptop and awesome GUI". I stand by my assertion that people buy Macs as fashion accessories, not for their computing capabilities. Sorry, Mac owners but you either: 1. drank the Kool-Aid (fell for Apple's brilliant marketing hype and use of a "hip" contemporary actor) 2. succumbed to peer pressure (hey, all my cool college buddies have one!) 3. had an uncontrollable desire to appear cool/be different/stand out from the crowd and thought a Mac was the way to do it (the only time you should ever tell another guy that your "hardware" is smaller and lighter than his) 4. think computers are "scary" but the Mac is "cute" and it "just works". Pray that it never stops "just working". At least OSX's GUI interface is a little more intuitive than Vista's (you can't right click folders in the default layout of the Start menu to add stuff?! /boggle) Last edited by skimike; 06-29-2008 at 07:02 AM. |

I think I'll replace my 2 8800 GT cards in SLI with the new ATI's 4870, they run even faster than the 9800 G2X and I'll have 'em in Crossfire
I have a 30 inch monitor that supports 2560 x 1600, so hell yeah they are only 300 bucks in each one ![]() |

The average mac user lives in ignorant bliss. I buy my mac, it has superior parts to a PC (even though they are the same, and custom built PC's are still better), my operating system was made by god (even though I can build a custom PC and upload Mac OSX onto it, and anyone with half a brain can get XP SP2/3 working flawlessly) and it has 0 viruses and 0 spyware.

TG Daily - ATI Radeon 4800 forces Nvidia to make price cuts for GTX 260, 280 unfortunately not quite hitting $300, ati is still winning

300 for 280 is similar to rolling the 7 on a single dice atm. 4850 or 4870 is what to buy at this very moment. probably by the time i finish typing some stupid thing will have happened and that'll be wrong (*looks up* ha i was still right), that's the way of things. I like the spot i'm in no matter how i upgrade i'm looking at a huge performance boost (currently running a 6800GS)
/begin idyllic setting and music My ideal video card is a 8 core 4870-esque, with enough ROP's, 6400SPs 2G per core, Quad UHDMI connections, and a driver that's more than capable of handling it all. I expect it to come out in 4-5 years. Along with my 1TB SSD, and 16core processor, and 8G stick of ZRAM, all to power a beautiful paint-on OLED wall and 3D projector. /crash back to real life none of which i'll ever ba able to afford... |
