New Gaming Desktop
Could someone please help me put together a NewEgg computer with decent high-end components in it? The budget I can work with here is 2500$. It must include an OS, a moniter [size does not matter, as long as it's flat panel], and keyboard/mouse. I would also prefer a headset, if it can be squeezed into the price. Anyone know if Geeksquad or any other companies assemble computers, in NW Georgia?

don't pay Geeksquad huge amounts of money for a half *** job of building a comp (if they even do), use this article, I am building my first soon, when you just read over stiff like this a few times, you learn tons about comps, and it makes it seem extremely easy to put one together, ill work on a parts list.
http://techreport.com/articles.x/13671/1 sorry, left the link out 0_o well, i got a list, this is completely open to critics, as I am no expert, if there is a problem, ask nearly anyone here,a nd they will ahve the anwer. Newegg.com - MSI R4870-T2D512 OC Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards Like 30 bucks more and out powers the 9800GX2 by quite a long shot. Let alone the lame 9800GTX. Also drop one of the Velociraptors.. noone will ever need 2 of them, use the money to change the case to a Coolermaster Cosmos 1100 S - and you should still have some money left over to grab a 22" monitor instead of 19". Aside from that it looks good.. The only thing I'm not sure on is the motherboard, the P45's are new and I know nothing about their performance.. Should be good though ![]()

Q9450
Gigabyte DS3R P45 mobo 2x2GB PC6400 800mhz DDR2 ATI 4870 1gb DDR5 (why get anything else? its the second fastest card out there for only $300, however If I were you I'd wait a few weeks til the 4870x2 comes out, it is only going to be $400 and it is benchmarking in games as fast as 2 GT280X's from NVIDIA..and each GT280 costs $600 Coolermaster Cosmos is a great cool and QUIET case, which is great with the 4870's turbine. 2x150GB 10 000rpm Raptors in Raid 0 (or 1 Velociraptor if you dont want to risk raid..or what would be best if you dont want raid would be 1 150GB Raptor for windows and games, and store all your media on a 500GB Seagate or something). Also don't get a 5ms monitor..you can get a 20 or 22" Widescreen with 2ms response for a little over $200...Dell, LG and Samsung make great ones. But honestly if you have $2500 to spend, I would wait til the fall and get a new Nehalem core with a 4870x2, and DDR3 ram. Last edited by Calindor; 07-26-2008 at 08:26 PM.. |

How far away in fall is the Nehalem coming out? I was planning on picking up a game [Spellborn], and this computer is about 6 years old, and can't possibly run it. So...I thought I might as well upgrade.

As I said, I do not know to much bout comps atm, and the new products, so do not trust me fully.

Nehalem isn't going to be cheap enough to even build a PC with a 2,500 budget. The mobo for the new socket is going to cost a ton, and the processor itself will cost even more. Not to mention its power will be useless. A lot of posts I see around here keep telling people to wait, but the fact is that something new is going to be coming out soon after each new part is released. If it's time for you to upgrade, then upgrade, there will always be new parts, and unless PC game companies decide to make games for the 1% of the population that is a enthusiast(lol) your PC will smash the latest titles. My suggestions...
Motherboard Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-X48T-DQ6 LGA 775 DDR3 Intel X48 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards One of the best motherboards on the market right now in my opinion. With ATI having amazing new cards, 2 PCI 2.0 slots is awesome. Supports DDR3 and the fastest processors. Processor Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Yorkfield 2.66GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors Overclock it, love it Oh, don't forget a fan if you do... Will drop your processor under a full load 10-15c Newegg.com - ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink - CPU Fans & Heatsinks Memory Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory 1333 MHz, matches your Processor, DDR3, incredibly fast, Corsair, nothing else to say. For your video card, take some advice around here and choose one, any will work great. Personally I like Nvidia, and EVGA because they are reliable. If I was to pick for you... Newegg.com - EVGA 01G-P3-1280-AR GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards Power Supply Newegg.com - Thermaltake Toughpower W0172RU 850W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply 100 - 240 V CB, CE, FCC, TUV, cUL - Power Supplies 850w, lots of connectors, will be plenty for what you need, anyone who tells you that you need a 1000w psu is a tard. with my suggestions your looking at 1500, that gives you 1000 dollars to play around with smaller things, like a case, a monitor(good ones arent more than 300-500...) hard drives, keyboards, mice. etc. Anyways, thats my suggestion. btw hi aion forums ;p edit: telling him to get the new ATI gfx card, or any top end card in general, then telling him to get a 20-22 inch monitor is a travesty. 8-5-2 ms response time, it doesn't really matter. Unless your playing like FPS in the MLG 3-5ms isn't going to break you. -.- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824255001 Last edited by Skold; 07-26-2008 at 10:00 PM.. |

Aloha, and why get a 19" widescreen monitor at 5ms, for $180 when you can get a 20.6" or 22" widescreen at 2ms for not much more?
Also 850W PSU is going to be useless with a setup like that unless you plan on going with dual GPU's in the future. Also I have to Strongly Recommend against a GT280, as benchmarks have already shown 2 4870's in crossfire to be better than 2 GT280's in SLI up to resolutions of 1920x1200 (and 2 4870's cost the same as one GT280), also the new 4870x2 coming out in a couple of weeks will be $400 and also better than 2 GT280's in SLI, which cost $1200, and you can also crossfire them. There are soe other reasons why the 4870 will be the best card around for a while...It will be the first integrated dual processor card...every other x2 card has been 2 video cards slapped together, for example a 9800GX2 is basically 2 8800gt's in SLI...The 4870x2 will have 2 processors acting as one, which among many other things means better performance and 0 microstuttering. There is no reason right now to buy a NVIDIA card unless you are brand loyal or something..Unless you wanted the absolute best card at the moment right now, you could get a GT280, but then you'd shoot yourself in the foot in 2 weeks when the 4870x2 comes out and beats two GT280's for less than the price of one. |

Well considering GT280s are actually about 450$ and I already said for him to listen to other people and pick his own card. If you are playing a MMORPG, like Spellbound, or AION, a 5-8 ms monitor isn't going to kill you, and it's going to look a lot nicer and put that enormous GPU to use.

Also you picked DDR3... There's something better you can do with your money, throw it out the window and watch the people below scatter around like ants.... Or you could be sensible and buy DDR2, which offers the exact same performance for half the price. DDR3 is not a now technology, it doesn't work well with the other components available. DDR3 shouldn't really be out until Nehalem which should actually be able to utilise it. With the current gen processors DDR3 is maybe 5% quicker than DDR2, and twice the cost... ie Not worth it.
