AMD's going through some rough times, no doubt about it, but for fanboys of the CPU maker (wait, do CPU fanboys still exist?) here's your feel-good story of the year. The always-thorough Tom's Hardware has pit Intel's 1.6GHz Atom 230 processor against AMD's Athlon 64 2000+, and the results just might surprise you. The 1GHz Athlon (with a core voltage of 0.90 volts and a power draw of just 8 watts) managed to best the aforementioned Atom in both energy consumption and processing power tests. The gurus at Tom's credited the more modern 790G platform and the highly efficient K8 architecture as big players in the Athlon's strong showing, finally deeming said chip "more economical, faster and quieter" than the Atom. We know you're in disbelief -- good thing there are 14 pages of proof waiting in the read link.

it has always been a i'm better, now I'm better... fight between the two. We will have to see how the Nahlem and Shanghai par up. Right now ATI is beating the 280/260, but that is just for now. Besides the #1 contender for the purchase of AMD/ATI is, in fact, Nvidia; mostly to hand it to Intel when/if they make thier "new and revolutionary" video card.. which i see flopping like they all did lol

These processors are not ment for gaming, maby if you are running multiple file servers and want to cut down on energy consumption. Also one of the big pulls to buy Nvidia and Intel is how easly they are overclockable, the new chipsets and bios for Nvidia MOBO's make it super easy, plus if you take a top of the line Nvidia card and top of the line ATI card and put them up next to each other you can see the difference right away. Nvidia looks cooler, they spend more time designing for functionality and usefullness. Nvidia cards handle heat better you can OC the **** out of them, same with intel chips. How much info have you seen out there on how to OC a AMD chip or an ati card? Does ATI make utilities that will OC your card for you? Nvidia and Intel are the front runners, I can understand people hating on them because they are the big names, but they got where they are now by out preforming everyone and working hard to give us the best products they can make. On top of all that I just dont believe it, I think all these benchmarks that are floating around dont mean anything, being in game and under heavy load is the only true test. So you go get your ATI/AMD crap and ill get my setup and lets duel! When your card burns up cause it uses lower quality copper heat sinks dont come crying to me. QUANTITY IS NOT BETTER THEN QUALITY. Yeah spending less and getting more is a definate pull towards these new products, but that is what these companies are banking on and I have to wonder why? If the card is so good why dontthey charge as much for it as Nvidia does for there cards? Cause it is not as good and they know it. There support isnt as good. ~ phadyd

Welcome to the biggest fanboy and uninformed post of the week
Either that or you've only known about computers for 2 years, because I guarantee you 4-5 years ago ATi and AMD were pounding the **** out of nVidia and Intel, on cooling, price, overclockability, performance and also (for the greenies) power usage. AMD processors for a long time were known as the "gamer's choice" cpus due to their amazing performance and ability to be pushed even further.

As to the prices of the ATi cards, it's a purposeful business move to reclaim some of the market share they lost over these last 2 years with the failed 2 and 3 series cards while ATi and AMD merged. It's a marketing ploy, nothing more - nothing less. It does not infer lesser quality components, nor lesser performance - simply a marketing strategy to get more people's loyalties back to ATi. You may think that it "****s with the consumers" - but it actually is fantastic not only for ATi, but for the consumers aswel. As you may have noticed the GTX series from nVidia has dropped phenominally in price these last 2 months due to ATi's aggressive strategy, and if ATi we offering cheap **** that didn't work - nVidia wouldn't be threatened and you would still be paying $800 for a GTX280 instead of $400.

No, this is not an AMD/ATi fanboy reply, I'm running an Intel Q6600 and nVidia 8800GTS - these are simple facts to cure some people of their terribly uninformed stupidity. Thank you and good day to you sir.
