For the last year and a half I have been in a desperate search for a new MMO that will hold my attention.
Let me preface this a little bit with some of the struggles/fun I had in WoW.
I was one of those 'had-been-playing-since-beta' freaks who had too much time on my hands. I lead a 40 man guild on a PvP server into server firsts from MC all the way to Naxx. I then rerolled Horde (lolalliance!) with all of my friends and and decided to just be a guild member.
You know... The kind of player that logs on for raids and actually gets gear on the reg. So I did! I had a blast in the pants re-raiding all of those groin-grabbingly awesome dungeons with all of my rl friends.
Then came the awe inspiring expansion. I couldn't wait for this bad-boy to come out, and when it happened I was even more aroused than ever!
So I ding 70 and start grinding rep for heroic keys, then rep from dailies, then rep from every other zone.
After the homies all hit 70 I start a new guild in which to raid with. <Terminated> (I love t2.)
So we raided. We went through Kara, Gruuls, Mag, TK, and SSC all the while loling at anyone who got in our way.
Then Tom Chilton pretty much ruined everything. From arenas to badge gear, to too many dailies, to... Well you get the idea. The whole game turned into World of Casualcraft. So I left, feeling unappreciated and kicked in the nuts for all the work I had put in.
Anyway, onward thinking! I found a few games and tried a few games, but every time, it just didn't have what I wanted. I found myself asking for someone to make the first two years of WoW over. (Or something similar.) So when I found Aion, I decided that this just might be the game I had been waiting for. A game that has the simplicity/complexity of WoW with a whole new story and flavor slapped right on top!
The suitable WoW clone I think all of the old-school warcrafters have been waiting for.

You think Aion is a WoW clone? Why?
I don't understand this concept.
Wow was a great game, it saw what MMOs had done before it and improved on it. Yet people play WoW and think it's the god of MMOs. That it was the original and everything that came before and after it is just a clone. WoW = God.
Again, I don't understand this view. I think Aion is very different, visually and game play wise.
All MMOs borrow from each other, this is true. But that doesn't make anything besides 4Story a WoW clone.Posted 08-17-2008 at 07:18 AM by LaSirene

No, they are using the whole 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' argument for Aion.
They've realized that people like the way WoW ran, so they're expanding on it. A la a suitable WoW clone... Unlike all the others trying to do something extremely different and failing horribly.Posted 08-17-2008 at 07:43 AM by Eau

I hate the term "WoW clone".
And don't think that Aion only looks at WoW as an example! =.=
There are PLENTY of good games out there. Not just WoW.
NCsoft are looking at lots of games altogether, trying to get the best of each into Aion, and adding their own stuff.
Trust me. I'm pretty sure that WoW isn't involved with Aion in any way. Or at most- in the slightest.Posted 08-18-2008 at 12:27 AM by Akirina

All game's could be called similar to any other, because we like what is familiar to us. That's why MMO UI all look so similar. (Cept FFXI, but FFXI doesn't like you even if you love it)
Plus EVE online was completely different and it had a good run. And POTBS.
But you are right, everyone likes WoW. But I still don't see how WoW and Aion are similar.
Can you elaborate?Posted 08-18-2008 at 08:42 AM by LaSirene

A few of the similarities to WoW are as such:
-Simplistic, not-trying-to-revolutionize MMOs aspect. The whole 'if it aint broke, dont fix it' argument comes in to play.
-The devs mentioned that they want aion to be similar so WoW players can easily slide into it.
-The gameplay is similar, whereas they arent trying to shove realism down your throat like AoC did. (Character control)
-Impact mechanics.
-Fantastical feel.
Those are just a few that got me jumping for joy.
WoW was a great game. All I want is another new and exciting 'version' to play.Posted 08-18-2008 at 06:21 PM by Eau

I feel kind of bad, because you are taking Aion and not seeing Aion but another WoW.
Plus all of the things you mentioned you either previously stated or could be found in other games.
If I had to pick something that looked/felt like WoW I'd say WAR. Their lore is remarkably similar, as well as gameplay. Except WoW loves you a great huggy bunch and WAR wants to hollow out your skull and use it as a nutcup.Posted 08-19-2008 at 07:22 PM by LaSirene

Well, WoW basically borrowed some lore concepts from Warhammer universe and crafted it to their liking, and they just happened to let out first. Everyone like to say "WoW this, WoW that", Aion is unique in its own way even if there are similar game mechanics, and I'm sure WoW wasn't damn first in using some of theirs.
I don't like comparing things, but more like "borrowing" a few ideas here and there. Most games like to do that a lot, many companies are too damn afraid of trying something new without feeling the backlash.Posted 08-20-2008 at 12:39 AM by Ecco

I agree with what LaSirene says ;p
Leveling will be inbetween WoW and L2, not too hardcore boring grind but not to easy either. Also theres the Abyss with the Tower Sieges, huge mad RvR battles, I don't remember WoW having those. Not to mention the story, its on a whole different track than WoW. Orcs, gnomes, orcs, trolls against Elyos and Asmodians, they're just waaayayyyyyy different things.
There are sooo many other differences, but I cannot point them all out due to there being soo much ^^Posted 10-20-2008 at 12:00 AM by SoraNashimi
