PAX - Halftime
Posted 08-30-2008 at 05:29 PM by Niki
I actually thought I would have time while I am here to update the blog with info about Aion and the event in general, but this con is a monster. Right now is the first moment since 7 am that I've been able to sit; yesterday's stand-a-thon was even longer.
I don't have any new info obviously, writing so late, but I'll throw my hat in and say this game is going to be off the hook. The demo setup was on a pretty high-end rig, and all the playable characters were NCSoft presets, but character creation was available to demo and that alone could sell the game. I believe there were 20 sliders for the face alone, in addition to being able to set all manner of porportions. The models look great, and I believe its entirely possible to create ugly characters to counterpoint your gorgeous creations.
Combat was pretty standard for an MMO, save for the skill-chaining system that looked pretty promising. Just use the menu to link up powers that can combo with one another, and trigger one to start the chain off. Skills further down the chain can later branch off into other skills and hence numerous combinations are apparently possible. There weren't any flying enemies in the area available to me in the demo, so I didn't really get to dig into flying combat. I did attack some ground-based critters while flying, which basically just forced me to swoop down to their level. They did seem to try to run away more when I attacked them from the air, not sure if I was imagining it or if thats an actual mechanic.
I got signed up for the preview event, got an Elyos cap (I'm still undecided, I just like the glyph for Elyos a bit more).
All together the event is pretty killer so far. A few games to be really excited about like Mirror's Edge, Little Big World, and Valkyrie Chronicles.
More when I have a break.
