Friend or foe?

Posted 08-08-2008 at 12:29 AM by Vent
I'll put everything here in the context of a PvP based games (shooters, fighting games, MMORPGs, etc), since it's easier for me to make myself clear in this context.

~intro~
In every PvP based games you try to defeat the other player. Doh, but it's not so simple as it sounds.
Why do we hate someone if he kills us? Is there any particular reason for that? Or is it justh humannature? But above all...does it make sense to hate a person like that?
This should be a short one...I hope.

~BEWARE~
nothing really, this article is save to read for the most part.
But I do like to say that there are always exceptions. So don't take it personally if you aren't one of the average people.

~friend or foe~

You start a MMORPG like Aion. You stumble upon a screen to choose between two factions. You click Asmodian, because you just like their looks. Heh, just like their looks. You're unaware what you're actually doing by just clicking an icon for once.
What you just did is declaring everyone who clicked on the other icon as an enemy. Atleast, that's the normal mentality.

Have you ever thought about a player in the other faction? Isn't your first thought: "that's my enemy?"? It's this mentality that escalates. We really do make them our enemies, without realizing it too much. You may say it's just a game, but look on these forums. The game hasn't even started and people are taking sides...massively.

Do we really view a stranger who is on the other side an enemy? Yes, why? Because the game forced us to. Now you can force yourself back to see them as normal people, but most humans don't make a fuss about it. Enemies are enemies, whatever!

Does it make sense to view them as enemies? Well yes, you need to kill them after all. They're against you after all. It does make sense, really, it's human nature to try to be better than others and struggle for own survival.

Although...the argument above is less than good if you look it this way. Our complete law system is based on to supress your natural desires (killing) with logic.
In the argument everything it left to natural desires. So it's actually against our law system...more or less. More or less because something like that isn't illegal. But our law systems states what's right and what's wrong. The above case is thus wrong.

It doesn't make sense...really. Always look at the bigger picture. We play games to enjoy them. We PvP to enjoy the excitement and the satisfaction to kill another player. The problem lies there. They may be our enemimes but we actually need them to enjoy the game. A lot of people don't realize this and just scold them blindly.

My message to all. Think of your opponents as a playing partner. A game, that's all, not a personal war.
