The mantra's are the "songs" you can turn on and off, have 3 up at once as a single chanter and 4 max with more than one chanter, affecting everyone in the group - the chanter included - within the radius of effect. They are sometimes called auras as well due to using the same concept as other popular games, in which they were often called auras

Any beneficial effect is a buff. Often though, buffs refer to exactly blessing of life and protection as you mention, as there are category names for the rest of them. Then there's incantations which are sometimes referred to as wishes. And a few other buff types which are usually either called by name or just indirectly included as "buffs".
