Renovating Car secutiry, in need of opinion

So, im doing this project for school and i need a public opinion about a fictional product.

This product is, simply said, a box that shoots halucinating gases in the offenders face at your will.
(that means, you push a button, the box targets the attackers face, and shoots the gas)

It can be build in any type of transport, from motorcycle to firetruck, public transport to civil transport.
the main idea of it, is to prevent hijacking and physical abuse.

if you could be so nice to vote and give your opinion, i would really appriciate it.

But, my teachers made it up and said to me "sell it, or you dont graduate"
so now im looking for realistic excuses of why it would or wouldnt sell..
(besides the fact that it can go really really wrong..)

that actually sounds cool. assuming of course that it merely disorients them long enough to deter their interest, but not hurting them.

Since it's manual activation, I guess it's no better than things like pepper spray, though supposedly it could be less painful.

but, what if the person enjoys the hallucination then it might backfire

ermm... Not sure how this would work on a vehicle, ie where it would go, how it would be directed at the attacker. I'm also pretty sure it being a halucagen it would act quite slowly and be quite illegal XD. But in a purely hypothetical situation, sure why not.

Something already exists along the same lines.

It's a 'flame thrower' and esentially, if you're in your car, and some guy comes up to your window or whatever with a gun and is telling you to get out you press a third pedal (gas, break, flamethrower) and flames shoot up the sides of the car.

Saw it on the tele years ago.

With any kind of gas (hallucinogen or other) IMO there are too many "environmental factors" that will come in to play. I.E. rain, wind, heat, cold. Any of these will change the way the gas behaves in the atmosphere. This one of the main reasons why quicklime was not used as a major weapon in medieval-colonial warfare. They simply couldn't control the compound well enough.

Hallucinating gas; A drug abuser could try and get high off of that, depending on their high. Or it could be a law suit waiting to happen either to the manufacturer of that defense system or the owner of the car from the attacker.

But besides pepper spray, I'd have to weigh the odds of 1.) inhaling that gas 2.) a child accidentally engaging that defense system and 3.) I might buy it if I lived in Seattle and the hallucinogen was short acting.

As for the duration or potency of hallucinating gas, I'd pick short acting. Why? Well I would expect that if they were trying to steal my car, it'd be a new car that could speed away if needed (if I was in the car). This defense system might not work if I was near the car or even knew it was trying to be broken into.

Yeah, I might buy it if I were to move to Seattle. The pepper spray has a much worse double edged sword effect but there are some pros besides that which stand out. Driving while under the influence of a hallucinogen might as well be bad too but let's hope you're in the car with the windows rolled up before that gas sets off?

Sorry, filecreator. That's all I've got when it comes to hallucinogens used for defense. The AI for that would have to be pretty high-tech (maybe even too early for this century) to be a proper way of defense. Certain things have to happen before that defense mechanism should engage. Otherwise, if you locked your keys in the car, I wouldn't suggest trying to open it yourself using conventional methods. Maybe one of those people who help you when you locked your keys in the car will have to be able to disable that mechanism.

This is when having a car navigation system is good. Sort of like OnStar (I haven't heard much about them lately though), you can have your car unlocked via satellite or something in that manner. Just hope that some high-tech junkie isn't trying to break into your car. They could possibly mimic that signal or frequency and unlock it. Not my department though. I don't know much about that. I just know that if my car had pepper spray as a defense mechanism, that thing better have an AI that can recognize me via DNA and outlook appearance.

Sort of like the Tachicomas from Ghost in The Shell. If they were the AI in my car, I'd feel much better with a pepper spray defense system, and to a lesser extent, a hallucinogen gas defense system.

So for realistic reasons, maybe; I might buy it. That's a big maybe leaning towards the no side though. That hallucinogen might not work enough. I think I'd rather stick to pepper spray with a VERY, VERY good AI. Along with an alarm and car engine immobilizer, the pepper spray is what I'd go for.

well, yea
there are some catches when it comes to the security of this product.

i imagine that when it would be real, there would be the following rules with installing/refueling:
- Only BOVAG certified company's are allowed to install it
- only BOVAG certified company's are allowerd to refuel it.
- The casing for xAttack should only allow the gas to go outside the vehical, in case of a gasleak

other rules:
- the system only fires the gas when the laser guidance system has detected a face, with or without a mask.
- The system should be bolted down in the car with a new sort of bolts, so that you cannot use normal screwdrivers etc to get it out of the car.

Also, i would like to quote a reply from another forum:

1. Gasses can be expelled with compression so that they only really go in one way (kinda like a fly spray can)
2. You could theoretically make it so it reacts with outside air, so it only has a halflife of say 2 seconds, effectively making it a one-man-targetted weapon.
3. Yes, we have no known compound that can cause such a "hallucination" atm, but there's no reason why we won't in x years to come. That's why it's a theoretical question.
