Yeah, that happened like a year and a half ago now... I was excited about it then, though.

To my understanding this is not true. I could be wrong but as far as I know when you achieve light speed, time stays still. That being said, you wouldn't age, and it would seem as if you got to your destination (provided you didn't collide with it or anything on the way) in an instant.

Exactly, because we are still moving at a normal speed. The people we sent would be fine, but we'd all be dead and gone.

From what I've read, and I'm not theoretical physicist mind you, it might not be possible to achieve the speed of light. But yes, time will pass slower the faster you move. So assuming we can reach half the speed of light, that means something that is 8 light years away (Gliese) would take 16 years to reach, and from there I have no real knowledge of how to calculate how the people would age.
But the big thing going now for space travel isn't going faster, but rather making an illusion of travelling fast while moving quite slowly (at least in interstellar reference). This would be done by bending space into something of a many rippled S and then moving from point to point and taking away whatever effect was bending space, thereby relocating yourself lightyears away despite only having moved several thousand miles before the uncrompression. I guess it would almost slightly be like war tunnels. Another theory would be to compress space, not bend it, and then move and allow it to uncompress. Think of a slinky extended, pull it in and move two inches, and when the slinky extends again the point is several feet away. Most importantly, slinkys are super cool. Well, there is also a theory that when something with mass reaches light speed it expands infinitely. What that means I don't know. I'd assume light particles had mass even if unfathomably small, and they certainly achieve light speed. And I think things actually can surpass the speed of light, like things travelling into a black hole... i think... Last edited by CrispyEclaire; 05-17-2009 at 10:16 PM.. I am not a scientist, and probably not all that bright, but there has to be life out there somewhere, even if it is just bacteria or whatever, I mean, there are bazillions upon bazillions of planets, and other masses out there in the galaxy right? So theoretically, even if the chance for life to exist was like, .0000000000000000000000000000000000001%, chances are it would be on at LEAST 1 other planet, right?
*shrugs* I doubt UFO's or any of that nonsense exists, but I wouldn't doubt if some sort of primitive bacteria or something exists on a water world, or a world with ice on it somewhere. Last edited by Xole; 05-18-2009 at 08:19 PM.. |

I firmly believe that there is life out there other than us. There's a few billion galaxies out there, and if we were truly the only living things in the universe, then that's a whole lot of wasted space.
