Whats the most stupid thing you've ever heard?

Some guy burned to death because his fire alarm didn't have batteries. It happened a few days ago. His friend(He bought the alarm with him), said they thought it was a solar efficient one that didn't need anything.

Me: “You… cut the cable?”
Customer: “Yes, and now it doesn’t work.”
Me: “You cut the cable on your keyboard, and now it doesn’t work?”
Customer: “Yes”
Me: “You’re going to have to buy a new keyboard.”
Customer: “Why? I was told we could use wireless keyboards.”
Me: “That is not a wireless keyboard.”
Customer: “Yes it is.”
Me: “Just because you cut the cord does not make it wireless.”
Customer: “Can’t you just make it work?”
Me: “Does your phone have a cable?”
Customer: “Yes.”
Me: “If you cut it, do you think your phone will work?”
Customer: *line disconnects after 20 seconds of silence*

From personal experience as a local raft guide:

Just a couple weeks ago, I was reading in a Cafe. I found myself distracted by a conversation between a man and a woman, (I assume they were a couple) who want to get the 'new car that runs on water'. I hoped at first that they meant some type of car that performs electrolysis while plugged in, in order to replenish a hydrogen fuel cell. After about a minute, the woman asked how it worked. He said, "It uses part of the energy from the engine, like an alternator, in order to split the H2O, and then burns the Hydrogen in order to run the engine"

I facepalmed, and walked outside. This was not, of course, the stupidest thing I've ever heard. But after a cigarette, I went back inside - a new couple was at the same table. I started reading, and the new couple started up on the same subject - seemingly a pure coincidence. The new man said almost the same thing, when asked. Finally, I confronted them, and asked how news of this car had spread, and offered to bet that the car as described was an impossibility.

He said that he had read about it on the internet, and had a reliable source. I told him that if this car were to exist, the newsflash would not be, "Car that runs on water" -but instead- "LAWS OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY DISPROVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!"

He told me, that he trusted his internet source *more* than "That law"

Still, not the stupidest thing I've heard.

I gave up after this, and walked outside for another smoke. (Only ten minutes later, but somewhat crestfallen, and nonplussed by the conversation. I really felt depressed. When a friendly looking gentleman asked what was wrong, I described the story so far. His response?

"If we can go to the moon, we can beat those laws. I mean, why did those science people, like NASA, go and invent them in the first place?"
