we picked it up a few days ago, the combat system is a lil different than i expected ( i was hoping for something more along the lines of oblivion ) but its not hard to get use to. and actually is pretty fun and addicting, dk if the hype is made up what it should be, but i can guarantee if you like RPG's ur gonna enjoy playing DA: O

I agree the story is incredible, but maybe the combat sucks because you're playing on too easy of a difficulty?

On Hard mode, I have to plan out each battle very strategically and co-ordinate all my party's abilities. Can't even imagine nightmare mode! haha.

Those asking about the combat: it's a lot like old-school RPG's where you control an entire party (in this case, four people). You do this by pausing, selecting a character, and using an ability. It's really interesting what you can do.

For example: You can have two mages CC different targets, and have the Ranger and Templar go up and engage another single target. You unpause, watch everything happen, and then you can pause again, have the mages drop nukes on the melee's target, etc.

On the easier difficulties, you don't need to plan as much, and you can just play it out in real-time. But there are times when the pause comes in handy, like when you don't realize somebody needs a heal until they're inches from death. You can just clutch pause, and then pop a potion or cast a heal spell.

The game is basically Baldurs Gate 2 with a fkn awesome graphics engine behind it. If you've never played Baldurs Gate 2 then kill yourself now or never touch the RPG genre again.

Basically the combat system is real-time, with the ability to 'pause' it if you so choose to, to issue commands to the other characters you're not immediately controlling. However if you set their tactics wisely they'll do everything you want them to anyway.

The graphics are about on-par with Oblivion, slightly better in regards to blood and gore, however the gameplay is nothing like Oblivion.. yes, both RPG's and look similar however the foundation is very different. Oblivion was more of an action game while Dragon Age is based more loosely upon the old D&D rulesets.

The story line is great, albeit a little predictable.. think of Mass Effect, except of a Fantasy setting. I would in no way compare it to ANY of the Final Fantasy series, completely different.


So if you liked the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset type of games, then you'll love this. If you've never played one, then this is a great game to find out if you do or not.

There is nothing wrong with the combat IMO, its very challenging and stays true to the old BioWare RPG's. That poster is probably too use to 'action RPG' games like Oblivion or Diablo 2.
