» Protect your account- Don't get phished! Info and resources about phishing scams in Aion and elsewhere. **UPDATED WITH NEW ATTACK 01/28/10** |
|
Jan 11, 2010 - 12:20 PM - by Knite
|
It's been pretty obvious over the last few weeks that the criminals are getting desperate. NCsoft has shut down tens of thousands of their botting and RMT accounts and they're attempting to make up for those losses by stealing YOUR account. Nice, huh? Well, what else would you expect from a criminal?
So, I thought I'd put this thread together of the different phishing attempts that are out there in an attempt to help you not get your stuff stolen. In the case of internet phishing, knowledge and awareness are your best allies.
First of all, always, ALWAYS pay attention to your browser's address bar.
Take a look at the addresses below. Only one of these addresses is the legit NCsoft site. Can you find it?
Phishing sites deliberately make very legit-looking addresses to provide the illusion that you're visiting the official site at first glance. But taking a second or two to closely look at the address bar can literally save your account.
Phishing sites will also copy the look of the official sites they're imitating down to the finest detail. Looking at the webpage itself is simply not enough these days. A site may look 100% like how it's suppsed to, but may still be a phishing site. The address bar is the only way you can know 100% you're where you should be.
(By the way, the correct answer is the top address. If you got that wrong and have visited e-mail or in-game links to NCsoft sites, you may want to change your password.)
Another new trend in phishing schemes is official looking e-mail messages.
Below is an actual phishing e-mail sent. The grammar is terrible and your first clue, but while reading it, ask yourself how legit it would sound if the grammar was spot-on.
Notice how the link looks like the correct answer for the above address bar quiz? So it should be safe to click, right? WRONG. E-mail messages and message forums have a stealthy power to them. You can type anything you want, highlight it, and link it to anywhere you want. For example: https://secure.ncsoft.com/login
Again, this comes down to checking your address bar before you enter your details anywhere.
Before that though, most browsers tell you in the bottom bar where you will be going when you mouse over a link. Go ahead and mouse over the google link again and look at the bottom of your browser. Do you see the link?
As a final note on this, never trust the "from" line in an e-mail. This e-mail says it is from support@ncsoft.com, but obviously it is not. Be careful with ANY e-mail correspondance from any site you log into or have personal information on!
Never buy gold or power-leveling!
Especially power-leveling since you need to supply them with your login information for it to be done. This is an open invitation to have all your stuff stolen. Gold buying may seem like less of a risk because you only have to give out your character name, but even goldseller sites can be infected with keyloggers, etc. I've heard cases of keyloggers even hidden in their "support chat" that you have to install to be able to use. Also, RMT is the reason all these phishing attempts are happening anyway, so why the hell would you ever support it? NCsoft isn't going to stop banning RMT and botting accounts, so buying gold is basically acknowledging that you don't care that you or other people are getting hacked and losing all your stuff. They're going to do whatever it takes to get the kinah to sell to people and right now that means stealing and looting thousands of accounts. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS THEFT.
Finally, watch out in-game.
There have been multiple attempts made on people's accounts ranging from hacked friends asking for account info: "Hey, this is Knite. Can I use your account for a second to test something? If that's okay, send me your login info." to random whispers from people posing as system messages or GMs. Never EVER send anyone your account info. Ever. Ever. Say it with me. Ever.
Never give your password to anyone- not even NCsoft. If who you are talking to is truly from NCsoft, all they will ever need is your account name. If they are asking for your password, it should be a big red flag to you. This goes for almost every business on the web also, including ebay, amazon, etc.
Be aware of phishing attempts from random whispers claiming you'll receive cool in-game items.
For example:
They will also try to pretend to be a GM by adding a lot of spaces after their original message so it appears the sender is GM. This guy failed at it, but they eventually get the spacing right.
Wii Sex Controller, Satellite watches, and other forum spam:
Even AionSource isn't safe from these criminals who will go anywhere Aion fans are to obtain their account info. In our case, they spam our boards with promises of Wii Controller porn videos or hidden spy photos of women showering. As tempting as that all sounds, for the love of all that is holy, do NOT click those links. You will be taken to a site that prompts you to update your video player to view said video, but really it installs a keylogger to steal your account info. We are deleting and censoring these URLs as fast as we can, but they're relentless in their persuit of your account and will spam as long as it keeps working.
See this thread for more info on what to look for there.
The bottom line is, they're hurting and they're desperate, so we're going to be seeing many, many more attempts that look more an more legit. Educate yourself on phishing, check our boards for the latest phishing attempts, and check your address bar if you follow a link to anywhere. Unfortunately, most of the time account loss is because of the user, not the company. Your first line of account defense is YOU.
Use different passwords:
Use different passwords for the various sites you visit. Have one for your PlayNC account, a separate one for your Aion login, and a separate one for your AionSource account. Having the same password for everything greatly increases the damage that can be done to you if one of those sites comes under attack.
NEW ATTACK 01/12/10
A new attack has started to be posted on our forums. They are threads that contain a thumbnail of a screenshot talking about a "Best weapon" or "Best skill" or "New Kinah Bug" - something to get you to download the screenshot, which actually links to a .scr file. .scr files are KNOWN to carry trojans, so please be very aware of these threads and do NOT click the links. We caught this one very early and I don't think anyone was hit by them yet (there were no replies in any of the threads) so hopefully this is a failed attempt by the criminals. Please report these threads immediately if you see them so we can make sure to add the file names to our word filter to prevent inadvertant downloading.
NEW ATTACK 01/28/10
We've seen e-mails pretending to be from NCsoft in the past, but this one preys on the dreaded "Password has been changed" e-mail that many people report they receive when their account has been stolen. As you can see, the link appears to be to the secure NCsoft site (see my description of this above) but looking in the bottom left, you are once again being sent to a site that will STEAL YOUR INFO. Do not fall for this scam! Thanks to Sinistre for pointing this out.

» The AionSource Community Referral Thread! (Free Aion Trials!) |
|
Dec 23, 2009 - 11:38 AM - by Knite
|
Hey everyone-
While I understand that many of the users here on AionSource have already purchased Aion, there may be friends, newcomers, etc who wish to take advantage of the newly announced referral program that NCsoft has made available.
If it's one thing we have here at AionSource, it's a longstanding community who have been in-game since day one and since the friend referral program requires you to have been subscribed for 3 months and have a current account, we're a great place to look for your demo!
So what's the purpose of this thread?
- To supply each and every person who is new to Aion and AionSource a friend referral to try the game out for free!
- To give the community a chance at months of free game time!
- To draw more attention to the friend referral program and get more people playing Aion!
How do I get a friend referral key?
- Create an AionSource account.
- Post your e-mail address and where you are from (NA/EU) in this thread.
- Wait for your referral e-mail! (Please then remember to edit your request saying you've received one)
What if I wish to send someone in this thread a referral?
- Make sure they are from your region (NA/EU)
- Follow the steps provided here to send them a referral key
- Quote their post saying you've sent them a key so they know to look for it (and 40 other people don't try to send them one)
- Hope they purchase the game so you receive 30 days of free play time!
Important things to rememeber:
1. In order to be able to send someone a friend referral key:- Your game account must have existed for a minimum of 90 days.
- Your account must have had at least 90 days of play time applied.
- Time included with a full version (box or download) is applicable.
- Paid time from a game time card or credit card subscription is also valid.
- Your account must be current.
2. Each eligible NCsoft master account can only have 4 outstanding referrals.
3. You will earn 1 month of free gametime for each referral that purchases Aion AND continues their subscription beyond their included month of playtime. There is no limit to how much free game time you can earn!
4. This is a DEMO of Aion, not an unlimited free trial. As with any demo, it exists to give you a small taste of the game prior to making the purchase.
- Aion demo accounts are good for three days, five hours, or level 7, whichever is reached first. At that point, the Aion demo account expires. All of the character information and progress is retained so that a player can continue the adventure when he or she upgrades to a standard Aion account.
- To upgrade an Aion demo account to the standard game, go to the Aion section of the NCsoft Store, or purchase a retail box at one of our partner retailers.
5. We're doing this because there is currently no way to receive a free trial of Aion other than though an established account holder, and being the largest Aion fansite, we have plenty of those! We want to offer a chance for everyone to try Aion and also to let our members earn some free time by helping out aspiring players.
6. We are not responsible for what happens to your e-mail address. We're providing this thread as a hub for you to try and get a free trial key, but if you post your e-mail address here, it will be very public. I suggest using a non-primary e-mail address and/or stopping back and editing your e-mail address out of your post as soon as you receive your friend referral key.
That is all! I hope this thread helps new and established players alike. Best of luck in earning your free gametime, folks!

» What's really in that Christmas Patch (1.5.1.7) |
|
Dec 18, 2009 - 2:18 AM - by Cynic
|
Hey kids, as some of you may have noticed last night the Christmas patch was rolled out onto our shores. Straight away we noticed that things weren't quite adding up with the provided patch notes, Spiritmasters in particular.
NCSoft later updated their notes to include spiritmasters however the notes are still incomplete, lacking a lot of things we know have changed. On that note I've decided to write up a more extensive series of patch notes, chances are there have been changes even we've missed so please feel free to contribute
Warning: Not all of the legion/fortress related details have been confirmed considering how hard it is to test these things however the likelihood of this information being correct is fairly high. Do be sure to let us know if you see anything I haven't
What's really in your stocking.

Game Mechanic Changes- Spiritmaster Pets have been granted the gift of flight, a sticky has been created in Aion Discussion regarding that also.
- Spiritmaster pet mechanics adjusted for aerial combat.
-When the player begins to fly, so to will the pet. The opposite is not always true.
-If either the pet or the spiritmaster is flying flight time of the summoner will be consumed.
-If the pet's flight speed is buffed the master's will be also, we assume the opposite is true (citation needed)
-The pet's speed will increase while flying.
-Once the summoner lands the pet will also when/if it gets in range.
-Whilst gliding only the move command is available for your pet.
-Your pet will attack aerial combatants however it can only be summoned on the ground.
-Pets do not receive falling damage. - Fortress Mechanics have been adjusted:
1. Fortress Guardians will now despawn after 30 minutes, there is still a five minute delay until their initial spawn. The 30 minute timer will not begin until then. The Divine Fortress is exempt from this with the bosses remaining for the full two hours.
2. Upon successful fortress defense not only will the defending legion receive medals but so to will the individuals who attended. In accordance with this the amount of medals distributed to each contribution bracket has been adjusted. 3. Contribution points (not AP) gained from killing PCs during fortresses has been lowered.
4. Medals are being shifted towards lower contributing players (see graph) Event Updates:
- Holiday Event (The Solorius Festival)
-Holiday NPC's, Cheerful Decorations, and Festive Music located in both major cities
-Special Vendor NPC's that sell party favors for all to use
-Fireworks are now available from holiday NPCs.
-Functional pianos, toy store ones at that, have been added to the major cities.
Added Content
Costumes: Regional Costumes have been added. Available in the Divine Clothing stores where Solarius and other outfits are sold for a pretty solid fee you can dress up
Dandy/Bustle:

Caftan/Sarafan:

Himation/Chiton:

Localization Changes:- Renamed "Gains Stigma" to "Stigma Skill"
- Corrected the variables in the "Transformation: Guardian Deity General" skill for Asmodians II – V and Elyos III – IV from the incorrect lower level ones that were displayed
- Corrected the skill description and buff tooltip for "Dauntless Spirit I" to correct values
- Corrected the skill description for "Empyrean Fury I" to correct values
- Fixed NPC's Buri in Primum Landing and NPC Asellus in Teminon Landing inside of the Abyss from asking players to submit a petition
- Searching items in the Auction House is no longer case sensitive (uhh not new? o.o)
- Searching for other players is no longer case sensitive
- Shield Defense has been renamed to block.
Skill changes. (Not yet updated on AionArmory)Wing Root I - Skills - Aion cooldown time adjusted to 2 minutes, effect instantly removes 10% of flight. 3% every 3 seconds for every 30 seconds is then lost.
Spirit Disturbance I - Skills - Aion Crashing effect has been removed, damage effect increased. Miscellaneous Changes:- Restore timer for deleted characters over level 20 has been changed from 6mins to 7days
- 5.1/7.1 directional sound is now working.
Bug Fixes:- Hair Dyes will no longer reset after 48 hours or future server restarts
Known Issues:- Siege weapons cannot be activated after being deployed. We're currently working on a fix but have no set ETA at this time.
- Legion Emblems may reset after a server restart
There's actually been a bit more added to the client however it hasn't been localzied yet so isn't available for most of you lot, a few may stumble across it though I hear that will be fixed pretty soon.
Regards and Merry Christmas,
- Cynic <3

» NCsoft releases a statement about upcoming progression (xp) enhancements! |
|
Dec 15, 2009 - 11:27 AM - by Knite
|
Hey everyone-
NCsoft released a significant statement to the community today concerning character progression. Today's announcement is a short-term solution to make way for a long-term fix next year. Now since these changes only cover select level ranges, I understand that some people will have some criticism, but the best thing we can do to have those voices heard is to keep criticisms in THIS thread. I've already instructed the mod team to merge/close subsequent threads about this announcement because the best way to submit our feedback is to be organized in one concise thread.
The important thing to notice here is changes are indeed happening- short and long term. This is, at the very least, a start and will benefit a high amount of the server population. Please be sure to leave your feedback, good or bad, in this thread, but please keep it constructive.
Greetings, Daevas!
We've heard your feedback that the experience curve can be steep in certain levels of Aion, and over the last couple of weeks, we've been evaluating how we want to address this issue to provide for smoother character progression. While we're committed to providing a permanent solution, our long-term plans require development time. As part of that process, we are implementing a temporary enhancement so that you can feel immediate benefits that we're excited to be rolling out this weekend.
To aid you in your travels we will be implementing double experience weekends over the next three weeks. These bonus weekends will affect characters levels 1-35. This includes crafting and gathering experience as well. After the upcoming three weekends, we plan on hosting bonus experience weekends once or twice a month. We want to make it easier for you to experience what Aion has to offer for your characters after level 35.
We are also adding a few permanent benefits with this week's patch. Soul Healing will be less expensive for characters of all levels, and we're increasing the experience bonus that Energy of Repose bestows for levels 20-44.
While the above is an interim solution, we will be addressing the character progression experience curve with a sizeable patch next year. We look forward to hearing your comments, and we hope you have fun during these bonus weekends. Make sure to tell your friends -the more the merrier!
Double XP weekends will run from 8pm CST Friday to 8am CST Monday

We appreciate all of your passionate feedback related to the double experience weekend as well as other hot topics that you’ve been involved in over the last week. It’s been valuable in the decision process, but ultimately this decision boils down to what’s best for the game.
Enjoy the double experience, the Solorius Festival and everything else that Aion has to offer.

» The essential "Visions of Aion" info & speculation thread. |
|
Dec 05, 2009 - 3:56 PM - by Knite
|
Hey everyone-
Not since news of beta and launch have we had something so big to look forward to than what was shown to us in the "Visions of Aion" trailer recently. As the biggest Aion fansite, it's our job to bring you all we can concerning info on this and all things Aion as that info is released.
That said, I am creating this thread. In it, we will update links to threads, articles, and various other info concerning the "Visions" trailer and it's implementation. This could include dev comments, patch notes, translated articles, etc. IF you see news such as this around the web or the forum that we haven't placed in this consolidated thread, please make a post and bring it to our attention. We want to provide a "one-stop shop" for this and I believe that with the fantastic things we've seen it is warranted.
I just want to clarify once more that what is seen in the visions trailer is NOT one specific patch or update. It is the product of many projects the Aion dev team is working on and if all those projects see the light of day, they will be scattered amongst updates. We all know how the development process works so there may be changes, delays, scrappings, etc. For now, at least, we know some of the things they are working on but we may not see any of it until 2.0, 3.0 or beyond.

That said you're still correct -- there's no ETA. The question in this week's Eye on Community will actually be in regards to the trailer and clearly state our stance on implementation, ETA, etc. directly on our website rather than having it scattered in replies on various forums.

This question is one we've been asked a lot this week, and we’re not yet ready to answer it in much detail. The Aion vision trailer released at G-Star gave a glimpse at what we have in store for the future of Aion. As you can tell from the trailer, the development team is hard at work on evolving the Aion experience in unique and innovative ways. Some of the features highlighted in the trailer are further along in the development process than others. Because of this, we aren't ready to share or speculate on timeframes.
Even though we're not ready to confirm specifics on features shown in the Aion vision trailer, we're very excited about what the future holds for Aion and are committed to developing the game's experience. We will provide you with further updates when they're available.

Stills & Speculation:
Please note that all the information in this section is unconfirmed speculation and is not an official word by any means until we are told so by the NCsoft devs or through patch notes.
- Upgraded Graphics! DX10? Dynamic lighting and overall crisper visuals
- New Zones! We saw a dangerous jungle, a vast living desert, an underwater city and world, and residential zones outside of the major cities!
- Dynamic Weather and seasons! Falling leaves, Accumulating and melting snow!
- Player Cities! Customizable houses and skins, multiple styles, customizable furniture and layout, city bulletin board, city decor. Did we see anything about legion halls?
- Mounts! One and two person mounts of at least 5 varieties, mounted combat, creature taming abilities.
- Improved Combat! Fluid motions, collision detection, unarmed combat, new weapons (Crossbow and Whip) and abilities! Finishing moves?
- New Classes? Fans have speculated Monk and Tamer classes.
- Player City Sieges! Bring the fight right to the doorsteps of your enemy! Houses appear to be destructible! Summon a Colossus to help? New defensive siege weapons- Aether Cannon?
- Vehicles- Boats were shown in front of player cities and also as a means to reach the underwater areas, but can players own and control them? Airships were also seen bringing a player to the city siege.

Here we see the new graphics and lighting being highlighted. We can only assume that this is DirectX 10 at work. This is a significant upgrade to an already gorgeous game and while it wasn't necessary, it is very welcome!

This city appears to be build on the walls of a canyon that overlooks a new zone with a lush jungle setting. By the construction I'd assume this an Elyos zone as the protruding buildings are reminiscent of Sanctum's towers and style.

Here a giant creature bursts through a cave wall surprising a party of adventurers. The creature bursting in appears to be a cinematic at first guess, but the actions of the characters leave me to wonder. The characters appear very controlled even while the creature appears very cinematic. Has Aion incorporated cinematic and gameplay together (as some Final Fantasy games do) for a more engaging game experience?

Not only did the dev team show us that swimming is coming (collective sigh of relief from the community) but they've also incorporated entire area underwater, which begs one to ask "Can Daeva breathe underwater?" Perhaps you use the essence of aether, much like you would to fly, to keep your lungs stabilized while under water thus draining your flight timer. Will there then be underwater PvP? If so, do the shark sword and shell shield give you an advantage? (kidding.)

Ah, one of my favorite parts of the video that struck me almost emotionally. Dynamic weather. The main question this brings to mind is "Will there be seasons in Aion?" If so, how often will they change? This seems like such a large amount of work for something that players will only see 4 times a year. Will it be based on the game calendar or RL months? Many questions come to mind, but one thing is certain. The new weather effects are gorgeous!

Another feature that's been on people's minds since development is player housing. Here we get our first glance at it with a group of Shugo working their tails off to complete this little abode. We can see that different textures are available to make your place unique including the walls, the roof, and also large ornaments for above the house like a leaf and a lollipop.

This is one thing that slightly disappointed me. Now, remember that this is all speculation, but it appears that Aion has adopted the "instanced housing" idea that Lord of the Rings and some other games have adopted. In this image you can see fences without homes in a pre-designed area. I hope that there are several different zones for player housing instead of just Area A, Area B, Area C, with exactly the same visual look. Instanced townships -look- nice, but have little to no individuality from what everyone else in the game has.

Are these a couple of different kinds of player houses or are these specialty buildings?

Here we can see what appears to be a merchant tent, a small temple, and another intricate building that does not appear to be a player house. Is it safe to assume that player cities will share the same conveniences as world cities including vendors, trainers, and a broker?

As the camera pans up, we get a glimpse of housing in the sky. The two smaller structures are indeed player structures but what about the large structure on the left? Could this be a legion hall or a city hall? If it is a legion hall and there is only one, it leads one to believe that each legion is in control of it's own town. If that is the case, do non-legion players get to have housing?

The interior of one of the sky houses. In the video we see that placement of at least the furniture is up to the player. We did not see if everything was customizable such as the fireplace, rub, and smaller tables.

Here we catch a glimpse of the new mount system. Not only are there multiple individual mounts, but it appears that at least some of them are able to carry two characters. The obvious questions are how does one get a mount and where can they use them? One of those questions is slightly answered later in the video. How many varieties are there? We see at least 5 in the video.

This is where our first new class speculation comes from. Here we see a character in a steepled hat with a staff. He appears to be wearing cloth or leather armor at this glance, yet he wields a two handed staff as a Chanter would. Watching him break in (literally) a new mount. Could this be a Tamer or Beastmaster class? If there are indeed new classes, are they still a branch-off of the core starting classes?

This is one of the new weapons shown. It begins as a staff but converts itself into a whip! Pretty cool. Could this be the weapon of choice for the speculated Tamer class? Makes sense for a lion at least.

The second new weapon shown is a crossbow for this ranger. How it compares to the bow is the mystery here. Is it an actual equipable weapon or merely part of an attack animation? It appears to be it's own just from the fact that the character puts her bow away instead of it disappearing for the crossbow.

We've heard whispers that a new and more dynamic combat system will be finding it's way into Aion. Here we see what appears to be a Chanter swinging her staff fluidly, taking down multiple beasties at once, which begs the question, when did Chanters get AoE attacks? Is it a new part of the dynamic combat that anything in your path gets hit? If that's the case do certain classes just have wider attack paths than others to make them more viable in AoE combat?

This move earned a lot of buzz among Templars. Here we see the Templar morph his shield into an overly large gauntlet which extends across the area grabbing an unsuspecting Ranger by the skull and dragging her to him for a well-deserved beating. Very cool.

This is footage of the second speculated class. His armor appears similar to that of the "Tamer" class we saw earlier but something is missing. This guy is using his bare hands to beat the snot out of the Tursin scout instead of a staff. Following the initial pummel, we see the "Monk" toss the Tursin across the ground and slam his energized fist down, attacking his foe with a powerful shockwave. These moves are unlike that of any class already in the game, so unless unarmed combat was added to one of them, this is new. Could the "Tamer" and "Monk" be the two branch choices for a new starter class?

Here we see a Gladiator or Templar with a greatsword performing a pretty devastating move. It has the style of what would be considered a "finisher." He rears back, charges up, and assaults his opponent with a vicious strike that tears the soul right out of her.

Well, we saw the cute and cuddly mounts. This one wants to use your face as a chew toy and appears very capable of it. This is proof that mounted combat exists (with at least some mounts). On his back we see a very familiar armor set. Now, maybe this is just a new set that all the devs like to wear, or this is a new set for the speculated "Tamer" and "Monk." Seeing this brings about the question of whether all players can use their mounts for combat or if it is a special ability of the Tamer. If it is a special ability, you have to wonder how viable he will be in the Abyss.

Looks like Assassins get a fun little ability as well. Here we see an Assassin leaping into the air and tearing this Spirit Master (probably) out of the air and whipping her to the ground before dropping down blades-first onto her. This would help solve the Assassin's issue of keeping their fights on the ground instead of taking to the air.

While this scene appears to be a cinematic, it's cool nonetheless. These massive airships float their way towards battle. It is safe to assume that these are not player controlled, though it would be very cool to have a legion airship.

A colossus rises from his resting place, summoned by an unknown class. This is probably another cinematic (unless this new class is named "OP").

This may or may not be part of the same cinematic as above. Even this cinematic gives great hints as to how a city siege will work. If you are attacking, perhaps you summon a colossus to lay waste to the village and much like capturing a fort, the enemy will have to defeat your "guardian" to win. Aether cannons line the ground as defense, delivering devastating attacks to the colossus as Elyos rain in from above dropping in from airships. If NCsoft can get this mechanic to work half as cool as the cinematic depicts it, it should be a very awesome addition to the game.
