Death Note - Live action
Mostly as an FYI. For those living in the states (unsure about elsewhere), next week the live action Death Note will be showing in theaters for 2 nights only (May 20 and 21st). I know I'm planning on going and figured I'd just give a heads up to everyone else. I saw the preview and it looked pretty slick.

Aye, L is sex on buttered toast, even if he gets a biased advantage playing L. Can't wait to see it in theaters.

I liked both of the death note live action movies. They dont go into as much detail as the manga or the anime, but I still recommend them. The first movie is the better imo.

Between the Live Action, Manga, and Anime, the manga was my favorite. I saw the movie and while L and Kira are pretty good, the CGI Ryuk is kinda blah IMO.
If your a fan I'll tell you to see the movie, if you don't know what it is and wanna look into it buy/read the mangas THEN watch the anime.

Because that's illegal.
Death Note is a manga/anime/live action sensation about a high school senior who finds a notebook called the Death Note. He quickly discovers that you can write down a person's name in it while picturing their face to kill that person; it is also revealed that the Shinigami (a god of death) named Ryuk dropped the notebook from his world for fun and sport, to see what kind of person would pick it up and what they would do with it. The main character, Light, decides to use the notebook for "good" by eliminating the criminals of the world, sparking a debate of morality within the forces of the law and eventually a super-detective known as L is dispatched to catch Light, who begins to be praised as Kira (Japanese pronunciation of "Killer,") a sort of savior. The series is interesting in that Light develops numerous complexes over his powers and what he's doing, and the game of cat-and-mouse between him and L to continue acting as Kira whilst evading getting caught is ever-amusing but also complex and sometimes goes into the realm of total BS. There are various rules that the Death Note follows, so you see Light attempt varying tests with it (for instance, the face of the victim must be pictured as the name is written so that people with the same name cannot be killed) and it's really a sort of power fantasy with a sick, morality-questioning twist with lots of intellectual debate and mystery. That said, some people quickly tire of its antics, but some people lap up the mysterious nature of it all. I'd actually say it's quite the opposite; considering what they actually deal with in the series, the characters remain relatively calm for most of it. >_> I'm not sure myself, but it's become wildly popular and I believe a sequel or two are planned, as well as an original side-story (I think it was written by the original author, as well, which is always welcome.) I was recently informed that Japanese productions rarely have even a fraction of the budget that American films can acquire, so that may have something to do with your perception. I think it looks decent enough to shell out for a ticket, at least. Blargh. That's a lot of typing for a series I moderately enjoyed. >_> |

I enjoyed the first death note movie because the ending was pretty cool. But it was just hard watching a live action version of it really.
If you guys enjoyed Death Note, check out Code Geass. It is very similar and it has mechs.

Reguardless if it's really great live action, I'll still go see it just to support the market for this. Hell, this is the first Anime/Live action movie in ages that's not being showing exclusively at art house type theaters.
