You've never seen Ong Bak, have you? lol
As much as I enjoy Jackie's work, his martial arts are always too flashy and over exaggerated. I prefer technical fighting, like the end of equilibrium Strictly speaking, not martial arts. But still viable, no?

Well both films were made on different times, so people's tastes differ over the years, and both have their own uniqueness towards action.
I liked both of them regardless and I grew up on watching most of Jackie's films back then, his films had a sense of humor to it back then. The final scene in Equilibrium is pretty cool, but in real life it's kinda hard do that sort of thing, I would be pretty darn scared when blocking shooting guns in melee personally. Ong Bak was pretty crazy with the fighting scenes, and if you watch the later films, it gets even more crazy.

This isn't any more viable than the Jackie Chan style show fights. Without a set choreography one of those guys would have been shot in no time. Also, they seem to insist on aiming at the head when the torso seems like a much easier target. :P
BTW, here's Jackie Chan's TOP10 fights by James Rolfe, aka The Angry video Game Nerd: Last edited by Frein; 07-13-2008 at 03:21 PM. |

Great clips. Personally i Think Jackie chans best movie is his Drunken Master. Heres a clip from the last fight. But watch the movie because all the fights are amazing.
As for the best fight scenes ever (And If your favorite fighting is kung fu) You have got to check out "Hero Of the East" Its an old movie about a Chinese Kung Fu Master fighting for love. He must battle with 9 fighting styles of Japan. Heres one of my favorites, its the chinese 3 sectional staff vs japanese nunchuk and toomfa. but seriously if you like this stuff watch the whole thing, it is truly beautiful and amazing!!

I think Jacki Chan has some of the most interesting fight scenes ever made, but I don't know if I could say he has any of the best.
One thing I didn't like about Legend of the Drunken Master is that the last fight was very similar to the one he had in Drunken Master against "Thunder Leg". Though, the quality of the fight is much better, the style is too similar I thought. As for Ong Bak it does have some good scenes: I don't know if I could really pick a clear favorite any scene, there are tons of good ones.

Eh... I'm not really a fan of the Ong Bak style of fight scene's because they focus so much on his power that the fighting is much slower than a fight really is (i don't mean the pace of the fight but the speed of the strikes). It just seems like too many instances of a fighter waiting to get hit. With a lot of Jackie's films, I understand they're choreographed but often times they play out with a more realistic feel...especially when he's fighting multiple assailants. He intentionally stays away from the "next in line style" that Bruce Lee often used in his films.

Also, often in Jackie Chan's movies, many of the flashier/sillier attacks would not significantly hinder the opponent from fighting back, rendering them useless, which is not the case when an expert Muay Thai practitioner knees you in the stomach. Muay Thai teaches not to strike unless it will seriously damage the opponent. Useless blows only open up your defense. The knee and elbow attacks Muay Thai is known for are some of the most devastating blows of any martial arts style. Last edited by Frein; 07-14-2008 at 01:16 PM. |

The Hallway fight from Oldboy.
Oh wait, you said Martial Arts. Hell it may not be Martial Arts but it's a three minute continuous-shot (No breaks or editing.) that is beautifully choreographed and executed. Plus the overly simple camera work and almost comical sense of side-scrolling ***-whipping adds to the effect. Haven't seen it? Shame on you. |
