Lifecycle of a MMO? To me it sounds more like a lifecycle of a <enter popular MMO name here> player itself. They are the ones, who hype unreleased games in their minds. They imagine that the next MMO which will be released will be PERFECT.. The one which ends all wars in the world stops hunger in Africa etc.. So no matter, what comes out, is a disappointment to them, because nothing in this world is perfect.
So they will leave and begin the cycle with another unrealeased MMO (How perfect it is etc). MMOs on the other hand will continue their lives without those players.. some more popular, some less. |

True and funny, the best combination
Two reasons for it really, first part of the blame resides with the players, for believing the marketing spiel fed to them before release and not looking at things objectively in the few weeks of playing. What I find really strange is even vets of MMO's (aka ones that have not spent 90% of their MMO lives playing WoW) fall for the hype each time and have not yet managed to see past their own newbie enjoyment during those first weeks (like already people, even in this thread, starting to hype SW:ToR, something no one has played yet and for which we only have marketing spiel at this moment) Second part is the gaming companies fault, they keep making the same mistakes again and again. What many people fail to realise about WoW, what made it so good, especially in the beginning, was not that it did new and original things (it did not) but rather it looked at all the mistakes of other games already out (mainly EQ,UO,Daoc,L1) and learned from them. Where every other MMO just seems to be making the same mistakes again and again, either by repeating again and again the same rookie mistakes with game design, releasing games well before they are ready or treating them as if they would not be an ongoing concern (aka acting like they just wanted box sales and then to hell with it), thus needing decent on going management Case to point, NCSoft as with Lineage made a good game with Aion, but they have not learned in all that time how to manage their game once it is live But for the gaming companies mistakes I blame in a large part the players, the fanboi's who will put up with anything, defend the game against all comers and Woe betide those who look at it critically and raise the issues that needs to be fixed for the betterment of the game Case to point, those who try to defend NCSoft's management of Aion in regards to total lack of in-game customer support and high tolerance of bot's. These people i consider not only the biggest danger to whatever MMO they play, but also one of the main reasons the MMO industry has not really advanced since WoW, because they keep telling the industry, "it's ok to release crap products and then drive them into the ground, because we will still love you" |

Ahhhh.....how quickly people forget what a nightmare WoW was for the first year...Constant Q's, little GM support, No content for the Top levels apart from Onxyia and MC, half finished zones (silithus for example), no mass mail, broken AH's, no content added for a year (wtf Dire maul?!)..Broken and un-balanced classes, no battle grounds, no real PVP apart from the zergs at TM/SS, no rewards for pvp at all..
Funny how people compare a polished game thats had 5 years under its belt and so much cash to throw at its issues it beggers belief, to a new release.. The time line at the start is the Lifespan of a 'Fanboy', not an MMO...Just because people have the attention spans of Knats and want everything handed to them on a plate (because WoW does it to appeal to Mr and Mrs 'cant be bothered putting in any effort'.). Im perfectly happy having to grind for gear, it makes owning it a reward for time and effort. It actually means alot more when you have to WORK for rewards rather than having to log in and faceroll through some crappy heroic with idiots for badges for gear that is completly overpowered for what people are using it for. Whats special about an "Epic" if everyone has a full set. ![]() |

"An" comes before vowel-sounds and "A" comes before none vowel sounds. So its "A" if you actually pronounce MMO. And "An" if you spell it out, Em-Em-Oh. |

Do you even know what MMO is? It's not a word, it's an acronym. It stands for Massively multiplayer online. Since when is the letter M a vowel? |

People who overhype things and buy into hype are usually let down?
Stunning new Goldentiger, keep up with the groundbreaking work. Also I'm glad the "better" mmos you play now are keeping your attention so much you've been trolling Aionsource since you quit. __________________
