music conversations always turn in to flames, but heres my view:
disturbed are a very good example of modern metal, they are (from a technical standpoint) very talented. they create interesting pieces, without the need for overly complex riffs or time changes and often display excellent technical proficeincy for both writing and playing 'simple' metal. but due to the genre they play, their music is often repetetive and lacks any direction. and while its cohesive and easy to listen to, it can be downright boring. they fail to experiment, and often over produce their music so that it loses much of the metal 'vibe' that would have run through the original performances. i like the band, but thet aren't brilliant and they certainly dont do anything for the genre. and without even trying to move into a sub genre, they oftentimes just seem boring and repetetive. |

They're more 'Yesterdays Old Thing' But on a serious note, anything Scandinavian will do for me, especially Amon Amarth and Fintroll |

Since when is yoiking celtic? These are both forms of scandinavian folk, one being norse, the other being finnish. Fail more. The growling is supposed to represent a troll doing vocals. And even then, growling vocals like this are just awesome. Disturbed sucks, they're nu metal --> auto fail. Sorry, but Finntroll's black/folk/humppa metal shits on Disturbed, and they're by far not the best folk metal band around. Bands like Korpiklaani or Eluveitie(the truly talented folk metal bands) would utterly destroy Disturbed and leave them crying because they finally realize their music sucks and is no more than talentless slop. Disturbed is no more than talentless guitar, with gay vocals and terribly boring drums. Grow a pair, and listen to good music. Last edited by Raptorg; 11-01-2009 at 10:39 AM.. |

I really like the melodies in folk metal, but as someone who absolutely cannot stand death metal I'm curious why almost all folk metal/viking metal bands have adopted screaming vocals. There are a few exceptions like some songs by Ensiferum:

Disturbed were one of the few decent nu-metal bands (which is probably why they're one of the very few left that still have anything remotely resembling a career). Unfortunately, being a decent nu-metal band is like being the world's strongest infant. The riffs and lyrics are and always have been trite and cliche, with pretty much only David Draiman's singing to distinguish them from the rest of the pack - which is a good thing, since he has arguably the most unique vocal style in mainstream hard rock since Mike Patton disbanded Faith No More. Add overproduction and overprocessing into the mix and it's easy to see why people, including myself, dislike them.
That being said, though, they do surprisingly good covers. I'm not a huge metal fan in general, though I know an overwhelming number of gamers are. __________________

Or in many other cases such as Eluveitie and Ensiferum, melodic death metal. Thankfully for you, there are also folk power metal bands, like Elvenking and Spellblast. However, these are rarely nordic folk metal bands. |

sorry, but i just have to point out the 'nu-metal' is not a genre. its stupid tag that people give to pop-metal crossover trash like papa roach. while i see where you are coming from with disturbed, i think thats pretty unfair since their sound is only so clean due to overproduction, which is probably down do their record label, not the band themselves.
like i said earlier though, i dont think the band are anything special. im not trying to stick up for them as the oppinion is mostly justified, but i hat the use of 'nu-metal' to describe a sound. |
