Havent interacted much with Blueholde studios, seems that the company was formed in 2007 by the bulk of the Lineage 2 development team who were working on Lineage 3. The game code was ment for Lineage 3 though it seems the employees took it with them.

Why? Because altough The Orange Box sells for dirt cheap and contains 5 games, all those games are about as crappy as crappy as any xbox discount Shelfer over at gamestop, please people, how many of you can honestly say that you can play puzzle games more than halo? if you can say it, then go to halflife forum and have your halflife orgy over there.

Halflife aint a shooter anyways, shooters do not have puzzles. the cloesest thing a shooter has to puzzles is battling thrue enemies to get a key that you use to unlock a door elsewhere, The purpose of a shooter is to shoot.

There are tactical shooters(rainbow 6) and there are run and gun shooters (halo). Halflife falls into neither category

What is wrong MMORPG's currently.

So after 5 MMORPG's in the last years which were a huge hype namely WoW/WaR/AoC/Darkfall and Aion which we all tried and quit something seems wrong with the genre.
Aside from the RPG aspect, you should play and buy MMO's for its longevity. You buy and subscribe to the game because you think the developers and the game got an interesting concept and vision for a RPG and you want them to build on it. However the opposite happens and after 2-6 months the game dies out and we move on.
Now from a developers perspective they still made money. Aion alone as numbers stated brought in 48 million in revenue from only the gamessales alone, put aside the extra subscription money.

This comes me to the first part of what is wrong with MMORPG's.
There are view company's with a vision and a team behind them that believes in delivering quality games. Games that are well-developed, bugfree and stable from launch, which can be build upon.
I dare to say that from any gaming company Blizzard and Bioware till now have only delivered finished and quality games.
These companies know what it means to have a solid and dedicated customerbase that trust in them, therefor netting you more profit in the long run, because these customers will trust in all your future products.
All the other companies think in terms of short term profit even if it means nyerking your customers in the face. Say Mythic, Funcom, Aventurine and NCsoft.

The second thing is the RPG experience. From the textbook RPG experience like D&D to Vampire the Masquerade to the single player RPG's like Ultima and Baldurs gate, a RPG is about 3 things.
1. Diving into a new world with its own lore, and experiencing the world, tales and adventures in first person.
2. Gaining experience by involving yourself into the game, and gaining more abilities/skills/traits while you level.
3. Killing big dragons and gaining fat loot.

Now in almost all of the latest RPG's the focus seems to be on the FAT loot. Either there is instagratification a.k.a. WoW, or there is the opposite in Aion, developers seem to think that players get enjoyment out of the loot, the Abyss points, renown points, take your gamepick.
Players do not care if it takes them 2 weeks or 2 years to hit max level, as long as they are entertained during the entier leveling process.
We always mention “the grind” as a very negative aspect of the game. However it is just a vague term. Games should be about the means to the end. Aion is all about the items, its all about the abyss points its all about the medals.
You have to kill 40000 mobs to get an item, you have to make 60+ crafts to make a good item, you have to kill thousands and thousands of player to get a good item, and capture hundreds of fort. And its all about obtaining those things, the actual involvement of obtaining an objective is boring. It is not entertaining. All of the thing mentioned before should be the so called cherry on top of the icecream, but we are missing the icecream.
Killing xx thousand of the same mobs is not entertaining, PvP should be about the PvP not the abyss points, sieging fortresses and big fights should be entertaining, currently they are not.
Not only that, but Aion has probably the smallest level cap there is to make groups with. Teaming up with people 4-5 levels above you will mean they get almost 50% more xp then you. Which is not always a problem, but in the longterm it even widens the gap more between players. All of you can safely say that throughout the game you have grouped up with max 5 people in your guild, aside from some forts and raid bosses.

Now to finish this wall of text, developers seem to forget what MMORPGS are all about. An entertaining experience from the moment you log in, till the moment you log off.
A new world to explore and fight in, and to have epic fights. Being it PvP or PvE.
Develop more content, and give new challenges to your customers.
As long as the current cycle continues, the MMORPG genre will slowly fade away, and all of us will get sick and tired of this genre.

To make it even more strange ,massively recently conducted a survey asking which MMO folks would like to see relaunched and it's very apparent TR is right at the top of the list :

In conclusion: it is apparent TR was very poorly managed by NCsoft- with almost no coherent strategy whatsoever- and it's also clear that in spite of that poor management developers managed to polish it , certainly in the final 3-4 months ,to the extent folks would like to see it relaunched . My suspicion is NCsoft miscalculated the time-frame in which it had to become succesful and canceled it too soon.And that miscalculation is due to its short term company policy .
