I think a monthly fee RAISES the potential of the game. GuildWars is the only GOOD free MMO I know of. Name me one other MMO that has no monthly fee and you consider "good."

Yes, I'm also one that supports monthly fees. It's not an atrocious sum of money we're talking about, and the pro's are just too many to neglect.
Besides, considering the amount of hours you spend on an MMO, the cost/hour gets really small. And yes, EVEN with a normal life, as the nay'sayers always put up as an argument. ^_-

Think about it this way: most people who get MMOs play them A LOT. When I was really into SWG I played it 5+ hours a day. So it would be an easy estimate to say 150 hours a month and that was a 14.99/mo. game. So all said and done, I was paying 10 cents an hour to play that game. Now of course this changes depending on how much you play, but its NOT REALLY MUCH if you actually play the game. Most people get paid at least $6.00/ hour so one shift a month covers your costs there. Plus I am sure there will be ways to get free time, like referring friends, etc.

I'm guessing that the game will cost ~$50 to buy with a free month and a $15 monthly fee. Seems standard now with most MMOs.

15 bucks a month is the usual rate, thats 50 cents a day, hardly breaking the bank.
It's not like you're paying directly to the developer's pockets, you're paying for proper GM support (not just some randoms with free time), server hardware upgrades, and to fund the updates that make a game like Aion 10x better. 50 cents a day to make a gorgeous game even better, seems worth it to me. If money if such a problem, walk over to a mall .. there's bound to be a couple days worth of change on the ground ... if you're that needy. :P |
