Experience Penalty in Aion, others.

I was reading the translated post with all the information and it briefly mentioned the experience penalty on death as well as the ability to recover "most" of it for the price of gold.

I was drunk when I read that, and it really killed my buzz.

But, I think I'm prepared to deal with it. How does experience penalty typically work? Is there any limit to how much you can lose? I believe I read that stats are static with level so these will be unaffected. But what happens if you de-level below the level requirement for your armor? In games where you do lose experience and can buy it back, can it be done instantly for the gold penalty or do you have to travel somewhere to regain it?

My actual mmorpg experience started with WoW. I played some free MMO's before, but I really forgot the details except for one and it involved an underworld that you had to corpse walk out of. [edit, and about 75% of your items dropped into a bag for your killer to reap.]

I know a lot of you have much more mmorpg experience (rofl) than I do, so I'd like a little insight on this topic as well as to promote discussion on this aspect of the game.

There is already a similar thread to this, but i think the new information justifies a new thread.

This scares me a little as well, I'm hoping your cant de-level, that would fix all problems for me, or if you can buy back 100% of the xp instantly for a gold penalty on death that would be fine as well.

It is a bit disconcerting. I would hope that once at the cap, de-leveling is not an issue if you can pay the gold. But the translation did say "most." I believe it was mentioned that PvP kills will give experience. That's great, but sometimes your team, your guild, or you, get rolled -- repeatedly.

Ya, it could really cause some issues. I have, plenty of times, wiped repeatedly in a normal instance, or been camped by a few people, if those delvled me 2 lvls i would be insanely angry.

Another thing i was thinking they may do, allow a full level of buffer after the max lvl, so you would be 50.99 and you get killed to 50.89, or any amount really, just so you have a good sized buffer. I really wouldn't like this either though, having to grind out levels just to cover your deaths =/

Well hopefully when u get rolled on you repop at a graveyard/shrine in a safe zone otherwise probably will have issues with body campers(people with no life) and people who are just really bored.

That's what I was hoping. Allowing experience to fill up to some reasonable percentage of the next level. In that case, my max level epic armorz will be safe on my shoulders.

If this were the case, I wouldn't mind so much getting it (xp) back. Consider it training to keep fit and in the game. lol

In L2 at least sometimes is useful to delevel, to farm some item or sp.

It all comes down to whether you can lose your level or not. Since the xp rate is fast (IE you wont lose a weeks worth of XP from one death) and that everything good starts 40+, xp loss may not matter because everyone will be 50 by that point anyways. It doesnt even seem like there is SP, you gain skills through progression and quests and stuff, so given the facts right now I dont see why they would have deleveling.

Whether or not I can de-level at the level cap will determine whether or not I end up playing this game. Crazy to say that after being so gung-ho about it, but this is really a big issue when considering the fun factor of a game. I don't want the game to be overly easy, but I think de-leveling is ridiculous.

I will not enjoy dinging 50 again. There's just not any fun in that for me. NC should let me know if I should give up or hang around.

Its not that much of a concern for me, Ill play either way. This is pretty much the only thing i have seen that i don't like.

Well, personally, I have no idea why people fear deleveling so much. I've never deleveled once in my life in any of the MMOs I've played. It just doesn't happen often. I've died, sure, but XP loss in the games that had it was only 1% if I stayed in the field, 0% if I rezzed in town instead.

Well I think there has to be something to stop you from constantly de-lvling once your at cap. But aside from that I was kinda happy to hear de-lvling was an option if you didn't pay it off. I have no idea what I might want to de-lvl for, but it can come in handy sometimes (in some games more than others).

I think it is all gonna come down to a lot of unknowns.

how much exp you lose, if it's exactly the same in PvP and PvE, how easy it is to get back, how easy it is to die/and how often on average a normal player dies, how much exp you can buy back, etc.

But as mark said, it will most likely not be an issue. L2 had a pretty hefty exp loss. But I can't really think of any time in my 3 years playing where de-lvling was an issue. But even that had a lot to do with game mechanics. I think de-lvling in WoW would happen much more often, and would have been much more of a problem. Guess we will have to see how it works out in-game.
