weird quest

hey guys, with lyankyj's request i've translated another quest which actually seems pretty interesting. it's based on one (two?) korean fairy tales which are the Angel and the Lumberjack and the Golden and Silver axe, which I'm not quite sure myself (having been raised with western fairy tales rather than korean ones) but it seems like NC decided to put a little humour into their quests. quests in Aion might actually be fun :O I'm looking forward to it!

나무스의 정체를 밝혀라!
The secret identity of Namus

아이온을 시작하고 나면 비교적 초반에 접하게 되는 NPC인 나무스. 얼핏 봐서는 평범한 차림의 나무꾼이지만 그에게는 사실 커다란 비밀이 있었는데…
Namus is just an ordinary NPC you get to meet in the beginning of the game. He seems rather normal looking at the way he’s dressed, but behind his ordinary lumberjack image hides a big secret…

나무스에게 책을 전해주는 ‘나무스를 위한 책’ 퀘스트를 아는가? 겉보기에는 평범한 배달 퀘스트지만 왠지 ‘전설과 님프’라는 책의 제목이 범상치 않다. 그래서 살짝 열어봤더니.
Are you aware of the quest “Book for Namus”? Looks like an ordinary delivery quest but it seems particularly familiar due to the name of the quest, “Nymp and the Legends.”

Long ago, there lived a lumberjack in a town well-governed by the twelve gods.

The lumberjack only gathered the amount of wood he really needed, and all the animals in the forest liked him because of his good nature. He was close friends with the young of the Elym tribe.

One beautiful spring day, a Kylinie couple came to see him.

“Mr. Lumberjack, we’ve become a pair. Please wish us happiness!”

The lumberjack wished them happiness from the bottom of his heart, but afterwards he started looking a little gloomy.

An Elym who noticed this came up to him and asked him.

“What’s the problem, lumberjack?”

Even the Kylinie have the ones they love but I’m the only one without a lover. I want to start a family too.

The young Elym knew how the lumberjack felt. One day, he came up to the lumberjack.

“I’ve found a bride for you!”
“Hey, I’m grateful that you’re looking out for me, but what do you mean you’ve found a bride for me?”

The young Elym really did find a suitable bride for him.

He saw that the beautiful Nymps came to the lake every night to take baths. Once they were finished, they dressed back into their winged robes and flew back to the heavens. One day, the young Elym overheard their conversation:

“Are you out of your mind? You can’t just leave your winged robe out on the rock. You won’t be able to go back to the heavens without it.”

The young Elym thought if the lumberjack hid the Nymp’s clothes she would not be able to return to heaven, thus having to marry the lumberjack.

The lumberjack and the young Elym began to plot. The lumberjack hid himself around the lake, and waited for the Nymp to descend from the heavens. Soon, a Nymp did indeed descend from the heavens and left her clothes on a rock. The lumberjack then hid the clothes beneath the roots of the Elym. He then told the lumberjack,

“Do not return her the clothes until she bears three children for you.”

The lumberjack said okay, and the Nymp soon came to realize that her winged robe was gone.

The lumberjack came out from the place he was hiding and gave her a different set of clothes he had prepared for her.
“I offer you these, please marry me.”

The Nymp could not do anything without her clothes, so she said okay. The two got married and the lumberjack was happy for the while they were together.

The couple had two children together, and had the Nymp was pregnant with another child in her belly. She said,

“I have a wish dear, I wish to see my winged robe again, then I think my desire to return will be settled.”

The lumberjack went back to the young Elym to grant her lover’s wish.

“Let me have her clothes back.”

Then the Elym asked,

“Did she give birth to three children?”

“She has another one in her belly so it’s as good as having three.”

The Elym shook his branches and responded,

“I can’t give it back to you until she has three.”

But the lumberjack was determined to give the clothes back to his wife.

“She won’t leave me, I know for sure. So hand them over.”

He presented her with her robes, and her attitude changed instantly. “A lowly human trying to deceive me, I cannot forgive you.”

Then the Nymp took the two children in her arms and flew back to heaven.

All alone, the lumberjack went back to the Elym to cry.

“I was stupid not to listen to you,”

But now the Elym couldn’t do anything either.

“That’s your punishment for not listening to the Elym. There’s nothing I can do now.”

The lumberjack had to live the rest of his life alone and lonely.

… 선녀를 님프로, 사슴을 엘림으로 바꾸면 완벽하다!
It all fits, the Nymp as the angel, and the stag as an Elym!

뭐랄까. 마치 일요일 아침, 처음 가 본 해외 호텔에서 두근거리는 마음을 진정시키며 TV를 틀었더니 ‘대결 맛 대 맛’이 영어로 나오는 것을 본 기분이라고나 할까? 친숙함과 신선함이 함께 느껴지는 묘한 부분이다. –ㅅ-
What to say. It feels as if I’ve watched “The Iron Chef” in English on a Sunday morning. Familiarity and strangeness…

게다가 이 양반의 일기장은 더 가관이다. 대체 뭔 이유에서 글도 모르는 다미누 숲의 동물들이 이 양반의 일기장을 복사까지 해가며 오늘 막 개장한 나이트클럽 전단지 마냥 너도 나도 지니고 다니는 줄은 모르겠지만. 아무튼 다미누 숲의 동물들을 무차별적으로 학살하다 보면 이 요상한 나무꾼의 일기장을 ‘매우 쉽게’ 얻을 수 있다.

I think it’s even more interesting that it’s so easy to obtain this journal. I don’t know for what reason, but the animals that don’t even seem to know how to read all seem to have copies of the journal with them, taking them to the newly opened nightclub every night, apparently. Just keep on killing the animals and you’ll be able to obtain this journal ‘rather easily.’

중요하다는 일기가 지하철 무료 신문 수준으로 떨어져 있다. ㄱ-;;
This supposedly important journal is as widely available as the free newspaper found in the subways

내용인 즉, 님프와 연못에 대한 것들뿐. 게다가 일기장을 줬더니 한술 더 떠서 이번에는 님프의 옷까지 훔쳐다 달랜다. 결국 플레이어는 보상에 눈이 멀어 한 불쌍하고 가녀린 나무꾼을 구제하기 위해 범죄의 구렁텅이에 발을 들여놓게 되는데…
Content-wise, it’s just about the lake and the Nymp. You return the journal to him, then he even asks you to steal the Nymp’s clothes for you. In the end the player, tempted by money, to help out a poor lumberjack in need, steps into the world of crime…



Caption: “It looks like you’ve been detected. Hurry and run back to Namus.”
Bubble: “Leave my clothes alone you thief!”


파티를 맺어서 님프를 죽이고 뺏어오는 것도 가능하다는 말이 있다. 슬슬 막장을 치닫는구려.
It also says it’s possible to form a party and kill the Nymp, then steal the clothes away from her. The story seems like it’s coming to an odd end…


Quest: Once I get the winged robe in my hands…
Every night…
Oh god! You surprised me. How long have you been sitting there?
.. never mind. Did you get the clothes back for me?
1. Give it to him
2. Think about your options.

이쯤 가면 누가 NPC고 누가 몬스터인지 헷갈리기 시작.
At this point you’re beginning to wonder who’s the NPC and who’s the monster

한 가지 재미난 점은 이 날개옷을 욕정에 헐떡이는 성범죄 및 협박강도 미수범 나무꾼이 아닌 ‘청렴결백하고 올바르지만 그만큼 퀘스트 보상도 짜게 주는’ 아카리오스 마을 신부님에게 들고 가서 ‘고자질’하면 괴상하게도 나무스의 청첩장(…)을 얻을 수 있다는 것이다.
One interesting thing is, if you tattle to the ‘honest and orthodox but also gives you a lot of rewards’ town priest about the pervert/rapist honest lumberjack, you get an invitation to his wedding…

날개옷을 선녀님에게 주는 것이 어째서 나무스의 청첩장으로 이어지는 지 모르겠지만 (실은 졸면서 플레이 하는 바람에 대화 내용도 기억이 가물가물 ㄱ-; 아무튼 이후 청첩장의 활용법을 발견하신 분이 있으면 속히 제보해 주시기 바란다.
I don’t know how getting invited to his wedding has anything to do with the story about the Nymp (I was actually half-asleep when I did this quest so my memory’s just kinda meh) but if there’s anyone who discovered the function of this invitation please let me know.

Bonus – The mystery behind angel and the lumberjack, the golden axe and the silver axe have been solved!

클리오네 호수에서 브락스를 잡다 보면 얻을 수 있는 나무스의 도끼! 이로 인해 나무스가 선녀와 나무꾼 만이 아닌 금도끼 은도끼에도 출연하는 ‘이중생활의 소유자’라는 사실도 추가로 드러났다.
Keep killing the Braxes in Clione Lake and you’ll be able to obtain Namus’s axe! Not only is Namus starring in the Angel and the Lumberjack, but also in the Golden Axe and the Silver Axe. He’s living a double life.
