Your thoughts on voice chat in-game?
I'll start this off by saying i'm not talking about an in-game chat sytem like WoW has.
What i'm asking is this: Do you enjoy using voice chat while playing a game? Do you have more fun when you're talking to your friends on mic instead of typing? Personally, I hate voice chat. Obviously it helps alot with strategy in tough situations or in high-class PvP, but I find It just ruins the whole experience of the game. Recently I was on WoW and 4 of my friends went on voice chat and I thought it was actually quite annoying while I was questing. I like silence and enjoy just taking in the BG musici n the game and sort of "immersing" myself into it. However, that doesn't mean I'm a role player. In fact, I hate role playing, but I like to in a sense remove myself from reality when I play games. That way I can leave my stress behind for a couple hours or so and enjoy life =P. However, when I hear a bunch of people I know talking, it sort of snaps me outta my trance (Weird, I know ).So what do you think? |

I love voice chat. I play xbox live a lot and I pretty much always use my mic. However, in a game like an MMO - or maybe PC games in general - it really isn't the same. It just doesn't seem like it fits in PC games, probably since you have to use a keyboard anyways, but on xbox live it's the only way(so it feels better integrated I guess).

just depends on what you like, some ppl like talking some don't i myself dont i rather type so that nobody can hear my girly voice o.O. Sometimes is very helpful for games like lineage 2, where pvping is a big thing and during sieges, those times its a must have i think. During pvp events i get on voice chat, but when im soloing i dont.

I like it when things are quiet. I really do hate loud, obstructive noises. And most of the time I don't feel comfortable talking in a mic because when I hear people I know, their mics distort their voice so that it's almost unrecognizable, and I'd rather not know what people hear when I talk. Actually, I do talk alot when I play CS or TF2, It seems alot more appropriate in tactical shooters than in an MMO. |

I played ffxi for a long time, never used Vent or TS etc. Course we had macro's so that helped with the strategy, and as long as your group was comfortably fighting together, even the high end NMs etc you could probably chat a little too.
I agree with Night Stalker, just takes away from the immersion. |

Good in PvP strategy, I hate it when I'm doing quests/grinding.
Used it a lot during the sieges in Lineage II, but ONLY during that. Got kicked by a clan once because I wasn't constantly using vent lolzor. The bottom end is that I don't pretty like voice chat programs, I use them only when it's mandatory. |

voice chat is cool when you ply with nice a mature people.. nothing more anoying than those silly kids ( read immature regardless of their age) that jump in TS/VENT to scream.most of the time i have half of my clan on auto mute due to that.

I can't play a game without vent anymore. When I'm leveling, I can't just sit there and level. I have to be talking or thinking about something else. I've never felt "immersed" in a game before. Games just don't do that with me. I have fun in games when I get to fight other people, that's when it gets fun. But yeah, if I'm grinding I have to be talking about something. Any game I play I either talk or listen to really upbeat music to give me a rhythm or I get bored after 10 minutes.

I'm in the same boat as birdman, sadly. Two years of being in an active WoW raiding guild has sort of spoiled me. Hell, after the guild broke up, one of my RL friends picked up the tab on the vent server for our RL friends to use, so we can game together as a group, and I probably talk to them more on that than I do in real life.
In a way, its nice though. We don't have to worry about people getting around or anything; we're all there already, hanging out, even if its not in person. Edit: Oh, and for the record...maybe its just me, but being in a voice chat doesn't really ruin my immersion at all. Admittedly, I'm mildly insane (no, really, I'm not kidding), but I've always been able to sort of section things off and function as two people (one real, one virtual) simultaneously. I suppose it comes from years of tabletop, IRC, chat room, and forum RP. Last edited by TwilightWaits; 11-14-2007 at 02:37 AM.. |

Theres nothing like talking to your buddies ingame and having a good laugh or interesting conversation. It adds a completely different aspect to everything you do in the game with them, and makes the game more fun and interesting. If your with a guild/clan that you don't really have this sort of feeling with I think your with the wrong people. Your guildies should be people your able to relax and have a great time with, after all your playing the game to have fun. (Unless your a farmer...) With that being said, I love voice chat, sometimes its even more fun being around the people I'm playing with, than actually playing the game.
Being in voice chat isn't about doing these so-called "Important" things such as raids or seiges. To us in BT friendship is more important than doing either of these things. Getting to know your fellow guildies, helping each other out, and working as a team are far more important. A good guild exists for one purpose and thats to have fun. Accomplishing raids, being the strongest in pvp, they're all ways to have fun in a game. But if you value these things more than friendship or others fun in the game your just being selfish. This mindset often results in people becoming scammers, thieves, backstabbers or if their in charge, horrible leaders. What a guild really means when they want you to get in vent/ts with them is they want to know more about you. They want to see if you can follow instructions, how willing you are to help out, if you can work as a team, and if you give a damn about the people your playing with. Even if your an elitist asshat who hates everyone and just wants your own fun, you eventually have to find a way to work or cope with others to get ahead.

Voice chat is simply good for different purposes. Personally, I enjoy voice chat due to the fact that I can talk to my buddies while playing, without the hassle of typing out some long paragraph.
However, I would also find it annoying if I were talking to strangers who I've never met before. Especially the really loud ones who don't know when to shut up. So overall, voice chat is simply based on opinion. Normally people already have Ventrilo, so I doubt adding a voice chat system in game would help it. Voice chat is essential for organized game play though, so don't count on getting far with something difficult without one unless your planning on a LAN party. |
