The Abyss - PvP Vs. Grinding: A Clash?
From what i've heard about Aion, i'm about 80% sure that i'll be spending most of my time in the Dangerous and Dark place known as the Abyss. However, i've been thinking... If the Abyss is essentially the place where exp rates are the highest and PvP is FFA (Free For All) then this might cause a few problems.
For example, imagine you're leveling your Character in the abyss, watching your back as much as you can, but also making sure you dont get killed by the mob. Surely there is a possiblity that whilst killing this mob, another player could come and attack you, and put you to within an inch of your life, only to be killed by the mob and not the player (intentionally, or by accident), thus losing your hard earned xp?. Now some people see that as acceptable, and thats just the way the game is. Others will find that incredibly frustrating.. Pesonnally im not too bothered either way, i'll play the game as it was made to be played and thats enough for me. But im interested in what other people think, as i havent seen it discussed anywhere else... just something to think about ![]() (P.S: i did a search of the forum but didnt see anything on this issue. If its been raised already, i apologise ) |

Is the abyss FFA or RvR? I thought it was RvR but I'm not sure, just curious.
Yeah it could be a bummer but who knows, perhaps the gain/loss will be worth it overall. Personally I won't guess at this topic because who knows for sure, have to wait for beta I think. |

There really should be no need to grind. According to a video from the head developer, the quests will be enough to get the character to max level, possibly the reason why mobs don't give much exp.
But, to address your fear of losing exp., when you die you lose some of your exp. anyway.

This is why there are peaceful hours after a siege. A phenomenon, Devastating Mist appears after a fierce battle, which is not letting any bloodshed. While the Mist is there, players cant PvP in that area, they need to wait until its gone.
Thats the opportunity for the faction members who currently control the area to safely PvE in the Abyss.

I'm more interested to see if Aion will have bosses that are camped and spawn every so often. Basically would create a PK fest and the winner gets the boss lol
Will be interesting. And I think we're all in for a treat with how it ends up..hopefully |

Loss of exp from PvP would not be cool at all. That would leave it open for high level jerks to screw with newbs or in the bigger picture, it would dissuade some PvP (definitely if there is a possibility of deleveling).

Dont have a source, but i'm pretty sure that i read somewhere that you can't delevel in aion (like you can in lineage 2). So pvping at max level wouldn't have any side effects at all and it would only slow down the leveling of lowbies.

The way the Abyss is designed is on a risk/reward system. If you want the good exp/drops/itmes you will have to risk going into a PvP zone to do it. As for exp loss on death, it's integral to have some sort of penalty for dying...gives you a reason to care whether you kill or are killed.
How is any of this unfair? It's not. I don't understand how people get to a point where they want everything at the risk of nothing...really how fun would that be? If you are carebear and still don't want to assume the [s] huge risk [/s] of lvling in the Abyss then you are more than welcome to level to 50 outside the Abyss which it has been stated is possible. Good luck with that, lol.

There was a time in my MMO career when I was hunting hapily with my friends, a guy came and started KSing us, we, peaceful people, killed him just so we could go back to our mobs extermination, then, the same guy came, again, and the proccess repeated over and over to the point where we had to leave in order not to become perma-pk.
What I want to say is that the guy never cared about his death, now, imagine 5000 people with that attitude, and you'll understand why death penalties are there.

Well I'm a big fan of the Carebears...sigh what to do now. But really, the Abyss is going to take interactive gaming and PvP mixed with PvE to another level. The Abyss would probably be the most attracting feature to people over Aion's various qualities.
And yes, there HAS to be a Death Penalty, or else noobs like Fleiva's speaking of will never leave others alone ![]() |

Reminds me of RF Online retail. The main zone for anyone level 35+ was called "ether" tundra terrain. Levels ranged from 35-45 mostly & there were plenty of mobs to go around. The aggro system allowed the high level players with correct gear to run through about 10-15 mobs and run through another player. Resulting in the majority of the mobs attacking the player who might of already been underpressure.
As you can clearly guess this turned into a funny situtation with so called trains being ran all over the zone.

There will always be areas that have mobs needed to complete quests that are high traffic PvP areas. No matter where in the world of Aion certain areas will always have more or less PvP especially when xp'ing in those areas.
Thinking they may use the same system that L2 uses for PK'ing but not mush info on the abyss is forthcoming at this time. |
