Switching to a non-TurboCache card would benefit you more than purchasing more memory. For comparison, let's assume you have DDR2-1066 PC2-8500 (PC2-6400 is 6.4GB/sec or 12.8GB/sec dual-channel) which gives 8.5GB/sec throughput or a theoretical 17GB/sec in dual-channel mode (theoretical - remember that real-world performance, even in synthetic benchmarks such as SANDRA fall far short of that goal...by about half, and that bandwidth is a shared resource). The GDDR that's onboard on non-TurboCache 8600GT cards runs at 22.4GB/sec at stock speed (700MHz) and is a dedicated resource. Also for comparison's sake, the memory bandwidth of an 8800 Ultra is 103.7GB/sec, 8800GTX is 86.4GB/sec, and the 8800GTS is 64GB/sec. Memory bandwidth plays an enormous role in the resolution you can drive along with other key functions (eg. 1600 x 1200 x 32bpp x 3 for triple buffering, and having to move that data at 30fps+ adds up quickly). Not to mention the latency to traverse the PCIe bus, across the Northbridge and FSB to access system RAM is far greater than memory local to a video card, and a certain amount of interrupts will be generated along the way. And, obviously, system memory dedicated to video RAM is unavailable for other things.

Ouch.. u seem to know alot.. well the computer was bought as it is and i did not buy the parts one after one and build it up my self.. was told it was a good computer for the price i paid for it and i then hope its good enough as it is without rearrange the parts and i dont think all the 1279MB is dedicated to Grafic..

Hope sum more news on beta is comming soon becuase i almost cant wait

anyone know if this game will take advantage of quad cores?

Very unlikely. It probably will not use more than just one processor.
Can't really see a reason why it should, the game you install is just a graphical representation and user input device. All the calculating stuff happens on the server wich probably will make use of quad cores.

It's built on the first cryengine which was built to use 1 cpu core.

The benchmarks for Far Cry, which is currently the only thing we have to judge against, on matched-clock dual and quad-core servers are identical within a miniscule margin of error and, to a very small degree, beat the performance of the exact same dual-core server when one core is disabled in BIOS which indicates the game just isn't that taxing of the latest generation of multi-core processors (and, obviously, isn't multi-threaded to take advantage of multiple cores).

Far Cry will run generically better on a multi-core system due to the multi-threaded nature of the video drivers (at least in the case of NVIDIA - I can't speak for AMD/ATI) and the OS scheduler being able to spread executing processes across more execution cores which means less context switching and fewer interrupts which, in turn, means more time for the game engine to sit on the core executing undisturbed.

While it is possible for them to add the necessary calls to create threads, it would add a decent amount of complexity and would only be an afterthough, ie "make this torch shine purdy" rather than synchronization thread/real-time shadows thread/real-time audio thread/monster AI thread/physics thread/weather thread/etc. Ideally, future games would be written to treat everything as a thread and rely on the system scheduler to do its magic. It adds a small degree of inefficiency when the number of threads that want processor time exceeds the amount of cores available to execute on but it simplifies design such that developers don't have to assume 1 core or 2 cores or 4 cores or 8 cores and add switches in their code for each case.

Have I bored you to tears yet? Good. x.x

I'm buying a new gaming computer, and it's going to run Aion beautifully:

Intel Q6600 (Core 2 Quad overclocked from 2.4GHz to 3.2Ghz)
4GB OCZ PC2-6400 dual channel RAM
eVGA GeForce 8800GTS video card
Seagate Cheetah 10k RPM hard drive

I'm not sure if I'm going to go with Vista or stick with XP yet.... but I don't think I should be concerned about system requirements

I'd go with media center if you don't already have it or planing to get a new OS. Vista is still buggy, sucks up all your virtual memory. If your a hardcore gamer you might wana stay away from Vista.

I'd personally stay at 2GB of ram for now and use the saved $$$ to boost up to a GTX or Ultra. I run a 2GB system with a dual core (2.4) at 3GHZ and a 8800 GTX 768MB card, and I run beautifully.

I highly doubt that quad-core would be the best option, because I've heard technical discussions about it being less efficient per core than a dual or single core CPU. Also, 4GB is just overkill.

I'm going to purchase a computer hopefully this year. I set mine up at cyberpowerpc.com. Give me some advice on changes if you have any.

Get a 10k RPM hard drive. The HD is the single biggest performance bottleneck your system has, the extra RPM will at least help. And make sure to OC that processor above 3MHz if possible so you don't bottleneck your GPUs

Yeah, I was fiddling with that idea, but I was worried about the cost. It's hard enough getting my parents not to buy another god forsaken mac.

Phiber, don't buy from CyberPower or IBuyPower. They both suck hard. Sure, the prices are alright and you don't have to do any work, and you even have someone to ***** at if something goes wrong, but it'd probably be a good learning experience if you made it yourself (or had me do it, lol).

Btw, that case sucks, even for a cheap rig.
