Why not put both in the game and simply leave it up to the player to decide? You can get a mount if you want, it will give you a land speed bonus and an air speed bonus. However the more you fly the stronger your wings get and the faster/longer you can go.
As for teleporting, I think it should be a skill that you have to earn. In CoV they did teleport really well. Not only was it simply a travel power, it was great in PvP. You could use it on enemies too. I have fond memories of teleporting people without fly about 200 feet in the air and just watching them fall. |

I think free form travel should be left to the wings and flying. But I'd like to see some set rail travel systems to change the since of pace. Say waiting for a larger faster air ship to a set location (ex: Hart from planetside or Zeppelin from WoW) or maybe your exploring a mine type of dungeon and a mine cart system helps you ride quickly from the beginning to the part of your dungeon where you left off at.
Variety makes the game interesting

Mount + Tele = More options, and player decisions, therfor more versetility and individuality.
Mounts need advantages/disadvantages, as does teleportation. If a player wants the fun of flying with their own two wings, the option's there. The buzzword of this post: Choice.

Hmm..this is an interesting topic of discussion, mostly because there are so many opnions and every one of them is good for their own reasons.
The two I'm most familiar with are GW and CoH. In GW you teleport to any of the cities or mish towns via the world map. In CoH it's a hybrid. The city is divided up into different zones. To get to a place within one Zone you have to rely on your own transport power, flight, running, jumping, TP, etc. To get into other zones you can run to the entry for that zone or run to the trains they have, log which zone you want to go to and it takes you there. This also cuts down on the NPC's detaining you as you run through them. *fond memories of the Hallows* CoH also has personal TP for transportation/battle, but that doens't seem to fit the genre this game is going for. This seems to be a good system to me, except when I'm in one zone and invited on a team for a mish in a zone three zones away. Then I wish I had a map TP like GW. To get to the bases in CoH you have to go to a base portal which is located wherever the supergroup decides to place it, and I do believe that the base pays prestige for the number of portals it places in certain area's. You still have to run to them... I'd suggest a certain amount of each, I like the idea of being able to directly TP to the guilds HQ, I also like the realism of having to fly to get to places, however I don't want to have to be at my computer to supervise my flight to wherever I'm going. Perhaps a transportation method within the game would be advantagious, like in CoH, the 'sky tram' in the form of mounts is avaliable at certain locations, flying to one of those you get a choice of the closest similar transit points, which you then directly teleport to. This also, in a way, brings the RPG part out in the game, certainly not all people within the game have wings how do they travel? Last edited by twylight; 12-18-2006 at 01:36 PM.. |

I dont know, I think people would like mounts. I would. It just adds onto the game's customizability. And that is what I play for. |

I chose for yes mounts and no teleportation. Because i love it when you have to travel around the world, the mounts could be super fast flying or running creatures, with the ability to make giant leaps.
Mounts should be some rather elite item that makes you transport faster. BUT NO TELEPORTING

'd say no to mounts. yes to teleportation to hub-spots. however, i might suggest that instead of mounts, you can obtain skills at certain levels (or a quest, whichever, really) to make you fly faster, as we will already have the ultimate mount system-wings.

i think the wings are basicly a mount. Ports should be something completely different. They should connect towns to make for quicker transportation. Once you reach a town then you can get your group together and mount up and fly to hunting spots. Seems easy enough for me

Other, I think you should be able to upgrade your wings later on to a ridiculous speed, the quest for this would be extremely hard and require lots of time, when you are flying in this faster 'form' combat will not be allowed. Just a thought I had.

Perhaps some sort of Enchantment style profession could 'enchant' your wings to make them faster, more endurant, increased armor in aerial battles whatever. Obviously these would have to be high level enchants and maybe only able to be issued to high level players to stop twinks popping up everywhere.

The higher your level, the longer and faster you can fly. That seems fair to me. So lower levels would be able to reach the higher grounds which would automatically become higher level grounds.
I say no to teleportation. Just get a grip on the immensity of the world. I say yes to mounting. Let it be cool mounts. I would love to ride a worm like in Dune (for the older members of this forum) or ride an aquatic creature to undiscovered islands. |
