The woes of the laughable Gladiator class.
Now before I start this constructive, albeit rant, regarding the Gladiator class I'd just like to do a quick inb4 so we can bypass the tired, cliche responses that these threads are normally riddled with. Inb4 "you're bad that's why you lose, you haven't played to 50 its totally different, this is not a 1v1 game, we're useful in groups"
Now that that's out of the way, lets start by defining what is exactly wrong with this class and then respond to common rebuttals to claims that we're gimped. Snares; there abundance amongst ranged classes and the lack thereof that we posses. We have one, one solitary snare, one snare that is on a 2 MINUTE COOLDOWN; a snare that can be dispelled, ported out of, cured by higher level potions and is commonly resisted. Allow me to present to you are scenario in which our ankle snare miraculously lands. You approach the target, ready to pop aerial lockdown and burst them down in a 10 second window, should you fail to kill the target in this allotted time, you will lose. The Ranger you are fighting sleep arrows you, the Sorcerer you are fighting blinks out of it, the SM you are fighting fears you, the Cleric you are fighting dispels it/blinds you, the Chanter you are fighting blinds you, what now? You lose. Our most pivotal, groundbreaking skill, the one we are most dependent on, the skill the very outcome of the battle hinges upon, can be made as superfluous as an auto attack. How can this possibly be perceived as balance? Compounded by the fact that this sorry excuse for a snare is a stigma, the most expensive in the game, our snare, the one that without we are totally non effectual requires a stigma slot and most commonly costs over 200K. Perhaps if Lockdown worked as reported( similar to hamstring in WoW) I wouldn't be making this thread and the Gladiator class wouldn't be as fundamentally broken as it is today, but I digress. How can this be? How can the gladiator, a melee class that does 90% of its damage via the initiation of, and continuation of, melee combat, only have one means whereby they may be allowed to do this in a 1v1 scenario(charge is an awful ability on a overly long cooldown) This stunning discrepancy in class mechanics is only multiplied by the fact that EVERY ranged class in the game has 3 or more CC abilities, none of which have ANY diminishing returns. A ranged class's aim against a melee class is to stay out of melee rang while sustaining dps, a melee classes objective is to obtain melee range and to sustain dps. So, tell me, why is there such a vast discrepancy between the number of ways ranged classes may fulfill their objective and the ways with which the melee classes, specifically the Gladiator, may fulfill theirs? Of course, the defining factor is that once we do get into range we are devastating burst dealers, capable of decimating targets in a matter of seconds, that's obviously why we are so easily kited, right? No, our dps is no more impressive at close range than a ranged class is at a distance. Again, such a inhibiting and bizarre discrepancy. Reliance on animations; This is a universal issue one that plagues the whole game, however it is most detrimental to Gladiators. This is another issue that when expounded upon really boggles the mind. How can a class, that's main objective is to deal melee dps against a target that is most commonly in a state of perpetual movement be reasonably expected to deal and sustain dps when they are arbitrarily required to cease ALL movement in order to deal said dps? Who is the idiot that designed this? Reread the coloured segment in your head, think about it for a moment, are you not disgusted? Many of those that defend the class, and claim that it isn't broken cite our 'devastating' AOE as one of our main strong-points, tell me what sort of mongoloids do you come across that stand still long enough for you to complete more than the first skill in your AOE chain? The lack of situational/actually useful attacks; What is the first thing you notice when you play your Gladiator? For the most part all of your skills are nothing spells, they do nothing other than deal dps, straight dps, apply little to any debuff and reduce the class to little more than a skill spam. The abilities that are useful, situational spells that must be timed, are few and far between, the result of which is a bland skilless class. This fact is made all the more detrimental due to the situational/useful spells we do have being on ludicrously long cooldowns. Aerial lockdown, our only means, besides our DP skill of effectively timing a heal/spell interrupt is on a 3 minute cooldown, our ankle snare as a broken as it is is still one of our few useful spells, 2 minute cooldown, and rage(dmg absorbing shield) the rest are meaningless, require little to no timing, and are for the most part useless, of course excluding our RNG knockdowns: 10% chance to proc 3rd tier AOE chain skill and our 3rd tier wrathful strike chain which are obviously useless unless RNG is on our side and we get a knockdown. If I may for a moment compare the class to a Warrior in WoW(oh god he did not just reference WoW what a baddie!) The WoW warrior has one straight dmg attack, heroic strike, it then possesses 3 shouts, to apply buffs/debuffs, a healing debuff/dmg attack, one aoe, one spell interrupt, one disarm ability, a spammable applicable movement speed debuff, and two charge abilities that when used commonly result in stuns and double as both spell interrupts and gap closers. Ask yourself, which is the more dynamic class? The Warrior that possesses useful, timing based, situational attacks or the mindless, clunky skill spam of the Gladiator? I am sure the fanboys will be incapable of agreeing with me, but I am quite aware of which one requires more skill. (obviously each class has more skills but those are the fundamentals) Where are the skills that actually DO something, that have the potential to actually IMPACT on, and stem the tide, of battle? Give me a spell interrupt, give me a disarm, LET ME TIME SOMETHING, LET THINGS BE IN MY CONTROL, for a game that's fanboys claim is SO skill based the reliance on RNG is appalling. Looking at the higher level gladiator spells is even more disheartening, more and more nothing, 200 dmg dealing AOE's and chance to stumble the target attacks, things aren't looking any better. An example and exemplification of the above point, is a Gladiator V Gladiator duel, lets assume both Gladiators have exactly the same gear/stigma spec etc, basically carbon copies of one another. The only spell, that requires timing in this scenario is Rage. That is ALL it boils down to, time your Rage, absorb their chain, spam your skills, and hope the RNG is on your side. I am not even going to begin to compare this to the timing and nuance required in a Warrior V Warrior duel, simply to avoid the thread disintegration into cries of WoW worship etc. Reliance on RNG; As I have already stated, this is game breaking, and LAUGHABLE, "Aion's PVP is revolutionary" lolno. Where is the skill in praying for an RNG? Praying for a knockdown? No, you're right, there is none. In response to some common rebuttals to the above arguments; "You're **** that's why you lose"; I know this will only provoke unnecessary and tired **** such as "LOL WOW PVP SUCKED" but as far as I am concerned I am not ****, in fact I am probably better than you, I hit Gladiator, 2.5k rating in s2/s3 so I KINDA have an idea in regards to playing MMO's. In Aion I can beat other Glads, Assassins, most Rangers and ALL classes other than the cleric if I get the jump on them, but the fact remains an equally skilled Sorc, Sm, Cleric, Chanter, Ranger, Templar is going to beat a similarly talented Gladiator. And if I do get the jump on, have burned my ankle snare already, whats to stop them simply CCing and running? owait "You haven't played to 50"; Is probably the most valid counter argument, although in reality all one need to do is look to the higher level gladiator skills(40+) They really evoke much hope for the class, our 'snare' immunity only provides immunity to little more than half available CC abilities Ranged classes have at their disposal, our amazing AOE's are still hampered by the inability to do them whilst moving, coupled with their laughably low base dmg(230-300) compared to level 31 Sorcerer abilities such as inferno(1750) "This is not a 1v1 game"; While that may be true, that is not a justifiable reason for one class to be fundamentally broken, scissors, paper, rock is fine, provided that if I am scissors I want to be able to beat paper, not be sodomised by paper, rock, and every other class besides other Gladiators and Assassins. "We're better in groups"; As opposed to what? Sorcs/SM massive burst? Templars/Clerics survivability? Chanters buffs/debuffs? Assasins DPS? Oh that's right our AMAZING GAMEBREAKING AOE, tell me, what awful Clerics do you keep in your company that are going to have trouble healing through the split AOE dps of a gladiator doing a total of 800 dmg to group of people, a chain that he must then stop and not use again for 10 seconds? More than that, what sort of awful players are going to STAND STILL while you complete the duration of your chain? IF you have any qualms with my thesis, more to add, etc obviously you'll state it, so go ahead. This was as much for my therapeutic benefit than anything. __________________ feels good man

tl;dr

And whats even more amazing is there are people that will try to deny this, defend the game as is, and try to act like these issues are not a problem. And most likely these people are of other classes.
This is the best, most well thought out and accurate post that honestly theres not much to add, you hit the nail on the head. Its just purely jacked up, you know the hilarity of it all too is the responses like "uh well Glads are the AOE experts"...which i laugh at because i just think thats such a sad sorry excuse and when i rolled a glad, i didnt go "gee i really hope this class has great aoe"...to me aoe is so situational, and was only a caster thing, to even consider it for a fighter class. Everything you said is just spot on...everything And its just amazing how the cliche posts come rolling in. Reason being is those people that cant post a constructive comment know deep down its true, so theres just no reason to even give them the time nor day. I hope this all changes though before star wars TOR hits or Aion will be short lived for me. |

And i dont know if its just me, but ive never once seen ONE of my massive crits that i get on PVE enemies. I crit around 1200 with a pretty regular 5-800 crit due to a nice stack of crit, and i dont think once ive hit a caster or any other class higher than a couple hundred.
Its amazing when i hit just about anyone youd think they were all wearing plate. And like i posted before, for a lvl 28 i got some decent gear i worked on getting. Worthy Noble Titanium weapons and the works...but yea, can go on and on about it thats for sure. |

What suprices me of most responses here is following
"get someone else to dispel" "get someone to heal" "get someone..." Incase you people have yet to realize this, adding another class to help you do your job only is a valid argument if it means your class is MUCH better at it than any other class, however this is not the case of the gladiator, we do not become awesome with heals, we do not scale better than the other classes due to it. Add a healer to any dps and the effect is the same. So basicly, you are weaker solo and your the same in groups, this is the basic fact of gladiators and anyone stupid enough not to see that deserves being **** on. __________________ Cold steel Warm Blood |

not to be a **** but...ur probably not the best player in the game so how do u know these players are not more skilled than u that are beating you. U say it urself that u beat every class(cept cleric which i understand that cause they nyerk me off too). And there is nothing to stop them from CCing you and running, if there was they could never win. Im a ranger, Im supposed to be kinda sneaky, if i get snuck up on im usually dead. Thats how it goes, im not gonna nyerk about it cause the idea of my class is to keep range so if i dont have that range im usually dead, yes i have sleep arrow but not much use if a assassin is stunning me every half second now is it. Just saying glads are supposed to get better and ur already beating people so why complain? ur not gonna own everyone. On a side note i love running with a gladiator in pvp, make great partners. __________________ ![]() Crows will darken the sky... |
