Race: Elyos

Im going to Kyoto for the first time this August so ive been hustling to learn it finally (doing Rosetta Stone daily). Its kool to finally start picking up on some things they are saying in those anime I watch. And the occasional "... thats not right ...." from the fansubs. I can speak and understand the basics I suppose. Me and my g/f fully plan on speaking nothing but Japanese to each other as soon as we finish the program to keep is fresh. Its easy to forget how to speak it, even with all the weekly anime I watch. But writing? Barely any ATM.

So far the only Katakana I know is の = no, and ユ = yu, which I use for occasional trolling "NO U!". I suck at memorizing those things for some reason, its the same with music notes. Ill work on it after I speak it more fluently. Would you guys recommend Katakana, Hiragana or Kanji for an ignorant tourist like me, lol? Actually want to learn that language, love the Japanese people (not in a wierd fetish sort of way). Actually need some help with something a bit personal (not creepy I swear, lol). Anyone?

P.S: Sorry to derail a bit.

They have different purposes, you should look up what they're used for.

Are you sure that's Katakana?

doh ... "hiragana" ... but then the "yu" is wrong ... bah! See? Ignorant .

lol, well thanks for the link. So apparently theyre all mixed at any given moment? Yeah ill definitely wait until i learn the language before I write anything.

Edit: Apparently the program im using uses both Katakana and Hiragana in the writing while they teach it. Not sure why theyd have different symbols for the same sounds. Would it be something like the "k" and "c" in english where theyre the same sound but its misspelled if you use the wrong symbol for specific words? Thx.

Hiragana is for Japanese words, Katakana is for foreign words. (although sometimes you will see Japanese words written in Katakana for emphasis) You cannot mix Katakana and Hiragana in one word.
The letters C, V, Q and X do not exist in the Japanese language. A true "L" and "R" also don't exist, its sort of a mix between the two.

If you are taking some sort of Japanese program, they should have taught you Hiragana then Katakana already. Those are the first things you should learn. It is possible to learn all of them on your own.
If you are serious about learning Japanese, don't learn it from a class back home. The fastest and best way to learn it is to take a Japanese language and culture program in Japan.

Personally, it takes me longer to figure out what katakana is supposed to mean, because the phonetics of the Japanese and English are often different.

Sure you can mix them...online. It gets really screwed up when they (Japanese people) start using English letters/consonants alone or mixed with random kana as abbreviations.

Yeah.

Uh I've never seen katakana or hiragana used with english letters.

And hiragana and katakana really isn't hard. Like Fellshadow said, you can pretty much just learn it on your own.
It's like memorizing a new set of ABCs.

Watch more niconico. You should be watching match videos, anyway, seeing as how you have Jin plastered all over your avatar and sig. But I digress.

Don't worry, hiragana and katakana are a cinch to learn.

Kanji on the other hand...

ソ and ン give me a headache. Otherwise, katakana is pretty easy, but I still find hiragana easiest of all.

I was listening to Pimsluers for a while. Its actually pretty good. I liked it better than Rosetta Stone (until I got version 3). And you can just listen to it on the way to work.

Kinda expensive ... but I heard you liked torrents.

Doesnt do the writing though.
