Well if they felt alienated I suspect it was not because several ranks were being used, but that the leaders obviously could not distribute them correctly.
That said, Aion has pretty strict number of members per guild so I think 4 or 5 ranks should be sufficient. Recruit - member - officer - leader would be best IMHO. Whatever they find out it's not really a great matter |

Another reason why WoW is horrible: it gives everyone the false impression that this is what an mmorpg should be like. 10 ranks was overkill. We used them all, but it was mostly for the titles. We had a rank for pvp players, raiders, etc. Half the assigned ranks all had the same permissions though so it wasn't really needed.
What I don't understand why anyone would want to make an overly complicated governing body. Let me rephrase: a complex governing body can lead to better management and fairness, but without the in-game mechanics to assist it is useless. I was part of a triumvirate (three leaders) in a WoW guild that ran quite well for some time. As you know, however, only one player can be the official guild leader and the day came where two of us disagreed with her. She emptied the guild bank and disbanded the guild. My point is that we were often told how much everyone loved the multi-leader system (we even had a sort of "congress"), but such systems only work when there are checks and balances. When the game does not support these checks and balances, but rather completely empowers one player, the idea of complex governing systems becomes impossible to implement.

WoW rank system was too much for me and I prefer the three/four tier system. I mean if you have nore than 4, it gets confusing for those who just started the game when your about 10 months in and it can lead to new members being discouraged. On the point of sucking up I dislike sucking up and it should not happen in a legion/guild it just makes the suck up more disliked by other members and huge arguements. Though the option to add ranks would be good, but I am satisfied with 3/4 tiers.

imho 3 ranks r the best solution. Why more? CL is a leader for whole clan and he's got designated officer for different things ie one for recruiting members, one for clan (legion) finance etc. Most clans aren't bigger than 50 ppl, only a few will be around 100ppl and those will be main politics force on servers, even if they got 100ppl then don't need more than 3 ranks

I used to like the EQ2 system before they added like the 12 ranks or whatever. Leader-Senior Officer-Officer-Senior Member-Member-recruit(?) and you could name your own ranks, even tho most guilds abused that. Although it helps distinguish wich officer does what in the guild. Personally I'm not a fan of the 3 rank system, but I can live with it just fine.

I also think operating with 3-4 ranks is easier and more practical but I would imagine there are going to be a lot of potential recruits who are going to look at a guild with all of its officer ranks filled and not bother to check them out and who can really blame them? If the option to advance or take on more responsibility isn't avaliable that is rather disheartening.

FFXI only has a 3 rank structure. Shell Holder(Leader), Sack Holder(Some call them officers, I called them Leaders as well), and Member. If Aion allows us to add multiple people into the very top tier of leader, then that is what I will do. When I place someone in a leadership position, it isn't a position I consider below me. I consider it 100% equal to the person who started the guild/LS/legion/etc.
If not, 3 ranks are fine. 4 would be nice, and 5 would be the absolute max. More than 5 ranks is completely ridiculous, honestly. At 4 ranks, it would allow for Leader > Co-Leaders > Veterans > Members. At 5 ranks, it would allow for Leader > Co-Leaders > Veterans > Members > Nibz. Yes, the initial rank for all new recruits would be Nibz, just because it can be. |
