Playing a Mage

At heart, I'm a nuker and ranged DPSer. I took a break from that in Warhammer Online, playing a Witch Hunter, which is sort of an assassin hit and run class. After reading about the Mage classes, I'm probably going to go back to my roots and play a Sorcerer. They look fun as hell!

Now the purpose of this thread is to get an understanding from those who have played them in beta as to different strategies to use while playing them and what to expect in PvP or PvE. It's also to understand the difference in firepower between the Sorcerer and Spiritmaster.

Hope to get some great info from this. Thanks in advance.

Spiritmaster is safe to play in pve. But kinda hard in elite areas because of the pulling ability of the pet...
PvP is hard. Especially in the air, because summons can't fly.

Playing sorc is totally different. You got no life like the spiritmaster but you don't have a tank. You have to pay attention all the time especially when agressiv mobs are around. You have to plan your steps well. Dealing with one mobs is pretty easy dealing with 2 is ok dealing with 3 makes you run out of Crowd Control skills. Without controlling your enemy you are fcked. In parties you are always needed. CC and dmg making sorc a class with alot to do.

Atleast if you like playing more then someone that stands in the last row and casts the same spell all the time you should choose the sorc. But still you could play like that and be steady dps casting firearrow without ever running out of mana.

Awesome info, 2aimless. Thanks! I've always enjoyed playing a CC type of class. How is the AoE?

Some skills like Hellfire got AoE dot. Or you have an AoE CC but the Sorc is no AoE class. More single target burst with cc.
The Gladiator is the one with the AoEs.

Cool. I was just curious about the AoE potential just because it helps with grinding mobs and such. The AoE CC sounds excellent. Again, thanks for all the great info!

Is no summoning still an issue? I'm really looking at it but if i can't fly with pets i can't see how i'll survive end game.

At endgame the SM will have the best AOE. However, if AOE grinding is your thing, glad is the way to go.

Sorc is the high DD caster whereas the SM is the dot/pet one which kites and slowly kills enemies.

The Sorc has better CC in PVE whereas the SM is considerably better at PVP CC (aoe fear, instant fear etc).

Sorc is a much better ganker and has the ability to one shot people with flames of hell and the lvl 40 dp skill.

SM has much more survivability.

etc etc

At 50 SMs have 3 or 4 AOEs, non DP, an AOE dot, AOE snare and AOE fear. Oh, not to mention that 4k dp skill that can wipe out entire groups of people.

the aoe dmg spells are on 3min cd, one takes the pet's hp the other is a stigma, the aoe dot is ok, snare and fear don't deal damage, the 4k dp skill is potable (afaik, might be wrong) (and counter healable, but i will not mention this as a disadvantage because the enemy will either pot it or die, as 4k dp skills are often if used alone a waste of dp).

True, outside of napalm sorcs AOEs are on shorter CDs (1min), but in response to the posters concerns about AOE and AOE CC you cannot overlook the fear in particular. The power of an AOE fear with a snare aspect that lasts 13-18seconds and doesn't break on damage is considerable and can have as much if not more impact on a battle than a single aoe attack.

Ah so many battles are lost due to this exact thing happening.
