At this time, you're able to run freely, but because being under concentration, you couldn't jump or do anything of the more advanced basics and as soon as you finished hitting on the buttons that are supposed to be for your combo, the combo would start.
As for the progression itself (which at this time is called grinding), I'd like to refer to the game Monster Hunter and the idea of rather complex bosses (although even in this game, they're not as complex as I'd like them to be) to be the main part of character progression. Maybe I'd even remove levels completely and just make people increase their rank, so they'd unlock harder enemies that provide better armor (while this armor would not just increase a few stats very little, such as the things you've already mentioned, but would also look way cooler and provide some special effects, such as always knowing where the boss monster currently roams on in the zone (while there are different maps) or not being affected by their screams anymore (I also took this idea from Monster Hunter)). Then again, this would probably remove the idea of a open world (one I'd like to keep - I still have to think up something about that).

This is actually the basic idea I was thinking about, too. But instead of simply increasing damage or resistance when coming to character progression (although this isn't something that must be taken out and the numbers you've mentioned seem quite reasonable as long as they stay as low), my character would start off with those basics every character has and will always have - the ability to block, dash (evade), attack (on their own - no locked on targets) and maybe also jumps and air crashes or even more than this (although this can be something that could be archived in the game overall as well) and a specific, balanced set of combo moves (those which you remember from fighting games - for example O, O, X - the basic one's are not supposed to be very hard to pull of, maybe even a line shorter). Through progressing (this is another issue, but more about this later), your character would learn additional combo moves. Those moves are meant to increase the potential of the character, not the general strength which means that they'd be much harder to pull off gameplay-wise. Like you've probably already thought, it'd mean to add additional lines to the move. So now, it wouldn't be only O, O, X anymore, it'd be O, O, X, O, X, X (very raw example - maybe there could also be some kind of delay in them to stretch the preperations of big moves a little).
This is not really a finished idea, maybe there could also be a combo activation button.

LOL no. I havent played Eternal Sonata. Is it a console game? Cause I dont have any of them... so any console game you have me beat on.

And yeah, well-endowed 14 year old girls should stick to fangirling over Twilight and boys. hehe

I like many aspects of MMOs, the first being to find strategies together with others to beat our enemy, the basic idea of immersion - to run around with people who feel the same way I do through beautiful fantasy worlds being the most important one's, funny conversations that just come up while doing something and in some way, also raising my character (which is the point I am not satisfied and happy with the way it is).

I also have already started my own thread in many forums in the past and it always ended up in a disaster - people being completely closed up for new things, as they fail to realize some crucial facts. The way I am going is to merely make people notice some of those facts and think about them from a different aspect.

And yes, I noticed. I read it. My main concern though isn't just people hoarding stats all day, it's the basic idea of gatherthing those to begin with - hence I'm arguing against the system MMOs have been using for longer than ten years, while I want to keep the aspects of MMOs I like the most.
