    I could give you a list of "helpful" phrases, but if you watch anime you probably already know quite a few.

    For actually learning the language, I would suggest either Rosetta stone, or Genki volume 1 and 2. You should be able to find Genki at your closest University, or I've found it on various online shops as well. Rosetta stone will give you a basic understanding of Japanese, mainly common phrases and responses. If you can finish Genki volume 2, you'll be able to hold a simple conversation.

    Basic grammer structure of Japanese is: X wa Y desu. Also, X wa Y ~masu.

    Watashi wa Kaedan desu. Watashi wa Nihon ni imasu. Boku (male watashi) wa eigo no sensei desu.

    EDIT: Just as I thought. Well, in romaji it said: kono kakikata wo yomemasu ka? hiragana to katakana wa kantan desu ga, kanji wa muzukashii desu ne.

    Hehe nah, it's off a comic called Fray. To be precise, this actual picture is from issue 16 of the Season 8 Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, but the character herself is from a kind of spin-off of Buffy, called Fray (made before Buffy season 8).

    The girl with the awesome hair is Melaka Fray.
