over 1,000,000 people applied for WAR beta. 500,000 for AoC, but those were applications.
Thing is, 180,000 concurrent players is awesome, but we'll likely never see that with any game in the US here. Why? Because the Western gaming industry has tainted what an open beta is. What was the last major release that offered a completely 100% free, available to anyone, no-strings-attached way to test their game? I can't think of one. All these companies are "partnering" with sites like fileplanet, who make you pre-order the game or limit the "open" beta to subscribers only, who must pay a fee. The whole "pre-order to gain access to open beta" is a whopping heap of BS in my book. There's nothing open about that. AoC did it, WAR did it, Tabula Rasa did it, etc, etc. If NC in Korea was doing this, the numbers we're seeing would be much different. |

I can't believe they charge for people to test their frickin game. If NCsoft was smart, it'd have month-long FREE OBT in NA/EU. The exposure, word of mouth marketing and hype generated by that would be immense.

We don't know how we are getting our preview events yet (?). Knite was referring to other games doing it. I'm hoping they won't go the FilePlanet way and if they do I hope they give invites via their PlayNC site too, so if you already own an NC game you can preview it...

If that happens, it would really make having bought GW about 2,5 years ago worth it xD

Not all of us have the straight cash to shell out 100$ for a game, I just spent 500$ on a 360 (Couple of games and an extended warranty) because FF13 is being released, and the 360 had a few more games I wanted to try (Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey mainly) because I haven't bought anything for myself since my computer 4 or 5 years ago. That being said, as much as I love guitar hero, I could never afford to buy it because it's price tag is as much as the system I played it on, even before I bought the 360. What I'm saying is, just because a few people have tons of cash to shell out because they can, doesn't mean the general population does. In all honesty, even if paying monthly comes out as more expensive in the end, it's easier on the wallet at that period, and almost guarantees good service. (Except in L2's case where the admins just don't care) <--- random face cause I thought it looked cool. |
